Wolves secure Region 1 wrestling crown

SYRACUSE -- With a super start to Saturday's championship round, the Fremont Silver Wolves claimed the Region 1 wrestling championships in action at Syracuse High School.

Fremont tallied 252.5 points, followed by Weber with 237, Syracuse with 233 and Layton with 232. Davis was fifth at 165.5, with Northridge at 58.

Fremont picked up individual wins from Jaydon Rogers at 106, York Ash at 113, A.J. Arteaga at 126, and Jake VanValkenburg at 220.

Prep basketball: Lancers nab long-awaited win against Darts

LAYTON -- For Layton, it must have felt like forever ago.

'It' is the last time the boys basketball team defeated Davis and 'it' happened for the first time since the 2003-04 season on Friday evening when the Lancers dumped the Darts for their first Region 1 victory of the season.

Boys basketball: Warriors take care of Darts

KAYSVILLE -- This time the numbers don't lie.

Weber dominated all key statistical categories and rode a strong second half to sweep the season series against Davis with a 56-42 dusting of the Darts on Tuesday evening.

At the risk of brain warp, some of the mind-numbing numbers include a 36-23 rebounding advantage and 23-of-26 from the free throw line for the Warriors. Weber held Davis to 29.4 percent from the floor and 0-of-10 from the 3-point line in the second half while shooting 69.2 percent in the second stanza from the field to finish at 50 percent for the game.

Girls basketball: Layton wins with teamwork

LAYTON -- On a team devoid of star power, it is all about defense and teamwork for the once-beaten Lancers.

In its final home game this season, Layton High again got balanced scoring en route to a 55-37 Region 1 victory Tuesday over the Silver Wolves.

"I'm not really emotional. I play every game the same it feels like," said Lancers senior center Courtnee Wood. "I came up as a freshman, so when it started, it seemed like it would be a long four years. But it's just flown by."

Prep basketball: Knights take over Region 1

LAYTON -- Like Lady Gaga, Northridge's boys basketball team is 'On the Edge of Glory' following its 48-44 victory over cross-town rival Layton on Friday evening.

With Fremont's loss to Weber, the Knights (10-7 overall, 5-1 league) are in sole possession of first place in Region 1 as they start the second half of the schedule.

"We want to be great; we have big dreams for this team," said Northridge guard Preston Christensen. "We have a long way to go and we need to keep working hard and stay hungry."

Girls basketball: Turnover-prone Lancers still manage rout of Knights

LAYTON -- It was a good thing Ally Wahlstrom was on because the Lancers were a tad off.

Despite an uncharacteristic 23 turnovers, Layton High still smoked the crosstown rival Knights by 21 points Friday in a Region 1 runaway.

"To me, our big rival is Davis. But to Northridge, I think we're their big rival," Wahlstrom said.

Prep basketball: Warriors pull away with stingy 'D'

LAYTON -- The Weber Warriors found themselves in a dogfight with the Layton Lancers Tuesday night.

Despite holding a one-point lead at the half, the Warriors turned up the defensive intensity and won their Region 1 game going away, 77-63, to wrap up the first half of region play.

Prep swimming: Warriors lay claim to Region 1 bragging rights

The Utah high school swimming season is winding to a close.

And it's been a fun one in Region 1.

Girls basketball: Titans rout Lancers in battle of unbeatens

LAYTON -- The "Duel in Davis" was a dandy -- for the state 5-A runner-up Titans.

Despite scoring 14.42 points less than its state-leading 71.42 points per game average, Syracuse High is the state's only undefeated girls basketball team after Friday's 57-41 Region 1 victory over the Lancers played before a sizable crowd.

Prep swimming: Mustangs stage sweep

HYRUM -- The Mountain Crest swim teams swept the Region 5 championships on Friday at the Stang Aquatic Center.

Hailey Pabst led the Mustangs with titles and a pair of Region 5 records.

The Mountain Crest boys dominated the meet, winning all but two events.

Prep basketball: Darts hit their mark in victory

KAYSVILLE -- By design, Davis would like to hold their opponents somewhere between 10 and 12 points per quarter, so on the surface, the Darts' 57-48 victory over Layton on Friday evening was right on target.

But it belies the fact that the Darts gave up 16 and 18 point periods mixed in with a pair of single digit quarters, on the heels of a 24-point fourth quarter meltdown against Weber on Tuesday.
