PLEASANT VIEW — The theme for the Weber High boys basketball team for the 2017-18 season is playing with purpose.

The effort, intensity and grit was definitely there Thursday night in a non-region battle against Layton Christian and the Warriors triumphed with a 56-42 victory.

Led by a pair of 6-foot-4 junior forward-center combos — Braedon Iverson and Ryken Nye — Weber outrebounded Layton Christian 40-25. Iverson finished with 14 boards while Nye pulled down nine.

The Warriors are now 3-0.

“There’s two things that I love about this team. They play with great chemistry and they play with a lot of grit, and I think that’s what they’ve shown (so far this year),” Weber head coach Ryan Jones said.

Weber needed the rebounding edge because of a tough shooting night. The Warriors made just 31.4 percent (16 of 51) from the field and 24 percent (6 of 25) from 3-point range.

“We weren’t shooting super well but we just played our game and hustled and we got it done,” Iverson said.

Austin Bartholomew, who finished with a game-high 20 points, helped Weber pull away late in the third quarter. He scored nine points in the period, all in the final four minutes, to help the Warriors build a 35-25 lead heading to the final quarter.

Layton Christian started to chip away in the fourth after Weber built its lead to as many as 13 early in the period, but Weber closed the game out on a 9-0 run. All nine Warriors points came from the free-throw line.

Brandon Capener added 19 points for the Warriors.

Braxton Meah led the Eagles with nine points.
