LAYTON — Something had to give.

Both Northridge and Bonneville came into Tuesday night’s non-league affair winless on the young season, with Bonneville’s losing skid at 14 going back to last season.

Coming down the stretch, both squads had a shot to get into the win column, but in the end, it was Northridge that walked away with a 59-56 decision.

“They were 0-3 and we were 0-3, so both teams were doing everything they could to get a win and I thought both teams did everything they could, but we just made a couple of more plays than they did,” Northridge coach Lyndon Johnson said.

A 3-pointer from Tyler Hancock gave Bonneville its largest lead at 48-45 with 6:34 left, but it was all Northridge from there. A host of Knights contributed in the scoring column, led by six late points from senior Matt Goodrich, to put together a 14-5 run before a Hancock 3 at the buzzer accounted for the final tally.

“We had a lot of second chances in the second half where we got an offensive board and either got a basket or got a couple of foul shots,” Johnson said. “I thought our effort was really good to either make a basket or get to the foul line.”

GIRLS HOOPS ROUNDUP: Weber, Ogden working hard as Warriors grab win

The Northridge full-court pressure rattled Bonneville in the early going as the Knights scored five points in the first 10 seconds of the game on a 3-pointer and subsequent steal. Northridge built its lead to 25-15 midway through the second period before the Lakers started to claw back.

Behind the play of Hank Bushell, who scored 13 points in the opening half, Bonneville pulled to within 29-26 at the break.

Neither team put together any runs in the third quarter, but in the waning minutes of the period, Bonneville’s Elijah Mason pulled the Lakers to within 41-40. Bushell then dropped in a putback with 46 seconds to play in the quarter to give Bonneville its first lead of the evening.

Then, with 7:22 left in the game, a Bushell make gave him 26 points and put the Lakers on top at 45-44 — but the junior wouldn’t score again as the Knights focused their defense on shutting him down.

“We went to a 1-3-1 zone and extended it a little bit to try to prevent (Bushell) from shooting, because he was making some big shots,” Johnson said.

Hancock finished with 12 points for Bonneville, while Mason also reached double figures with 11 points.

Northridge’s balanced attack was paced by Goodrich’s 15 points, while Jackson Kohl scored 10, both David Nickerson and Alec Duffin dropped in nine and Jovonte Wyllie contributed seven.
