Big Sky Tournament 1st Round: Northern Colorado advances to meet Weber State

RENO, Nev. — The Big Sky Conference men’s basketball tournament tipped off Tuesday at the Reno Events Center. Weber State learned its quarterfinals opponent as it byed through the first round.

NORTHERN COLORADO 82, NORTHERN ARIZONA 59

Jordan Davis scored 21 points and No. 5 Northern Colorado (21-11) sprinted past woeful No. 12 Northern Arizona (5-27) in first-round play.

The Bears scored 27 points off 18 NAU turnovers and pulled down 14 offensive rebounds to overwhelm the Lumberjacks.

Anthony Johnson added 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting from deep. Andre Spight and Jordan Radebaugh each scored 12.

For NAU, Corey Brown led the scoring with 13 points.

Northern Colorado advances to play Weber State at 3:35 p.m. MST Thursday.

NORTH DAKOTA 76, MONTANA STATE 74

No. 9 Montana State held a 19-point lead with 11 minutes left but scored only 10 more points and No. 8 North Dakota stormed back to claim a victory, its fourth straight in conference tournament play.

With less than 10 seconds left, Geno Crandall had a potential game-winner blocked but Kienan Walter gathered the ball and scored to win it.

Marlon Stewart scored 29 points for UND (12-19). Crandall added 18.

Devonte Klines scored 16 for Montana State (13-19).

UND will play Montana at 1:05 p.m. Thursday.

SOUTHERN UTAH 76, IDAHO STATE 68

With two key contributors at home with illness and injury, No. 7 Idaho State became the tournament’s first upset victim in a loss to No. 10 Southern Utah.

SUU (12-18) closed the first half on a 19-5 run to take a 39-33 halftime lead it wouldn’t relinquish. Brandon Better led the Thunderbirds with 18 points. Jadon Cohee added 15 points.

Brandon Boyd scored 22 to lead Idaho State (14-16), which has gone 0-3 in Reno.

SUU advances to play Idaho at 6:35 p.m. Thursday.

PORTLAND STATE 71, SACRAMENTO STATE 67

No. 6 seed Portland State secured its first win over No. 11 Sacramento State this season, holding off a late flurry to advance.

Sac State (7-24) cut a 16-point deficit to as close as one in the second half but never took the lead. Bryce Fowler led the Hornets with 16 points.

The Vikings (19-12) got 18 points, six rebounds and four assists from Big Sky freshman of the year Holland Woods.

PSU will play Eastern Washington at 9:05 p.m. Thursday.
