Thousands of dog lovers celebrated National Dog Day with the hashtag #NationalDogDay on social media Tuesday, commemorating the holiday’s 10th anniversary.
Also known as International Dog Day and Dog Appreciation Day, is celebrated on Aug. 26 every year and helps bring awareness to the thousands of dogs that need rescuing.
“I founded National Dog Day in 2004 to honor dogs, to give them ’a day,’ to show our deep appreciation for the historical connection of companionship with one another — for their endearing patience, unquestioning loyalty, for their work protecting our streets, homes and families as Police K-9’s, Military Working Dogs, Guide Dogs and Therapy Dogs,” said National Dog Day founder Colleen Paige on the holiday’s website. “... I want the world to celebrate dogs for their capacity to love and their ability to impact our lives everyday in the most miraculous ways. I want this to be a day to encourage dog ownership of all breeds, mixed and pure – to help abolish puppy mills and end breed specific legislation so we can create a world where all dogs (and every animal) can live a happy, safe and abuse-free life.”
All dog lovers are encouraged to either donate $5 to their local shelter or rescue a dog on National Dog Day.
National Dog Day partners American Authors and the Petfinder Foundation, released a video to the band’s newest single “Believer” featuring photos and tweets of dog owners and their furry best friends.
Celebrities joined in on the love, sharing sweet photos and messages expressing gratitude for their pooches.
Sharon Osbourne even invited her followers to tweet her pictures of their own “angels.”
Jaime Lynn Spears shared a snapshot of her daughter and best friend.
Emmy Rossum adorably calls her dogs her "roommates."
And "Modern Family" star Rico Rodriguez posed with his "baby" while playing fetch.
