John was born in Moran Texas, May 23, 1927, to John and Bernice Mahoney Cole. The family, including his brother, Richard (deceased) and sister, Frances, lived in Colorado until John was 15, when they moved to Ogden, Utah.
At age 17, John enlisted in the Marine Corps. He was in training for the invasion of Japan when WWII ended.
In July 1950 John's Marine Corps Reserve unit was called into action at the start of the conflict in Korea. He was with the 1st Marine Division at the Chosin Reservoir, North Korea when "Hell Froze Over," November to December 1950.
He married Donna Jean Bingham of Riverdale, Utah on June 28, 1946, in the base chapel at Bremerton Washingto Naval Shipyard. They have four sons: Jim (Bonnie), Jack (Pam), Rich (Cathy) and Casey; seven grandchildren (one deceased) and 15 great-grandchildren.
A family dinner party to celebrate his birthday and John and Donna's 71 years of marriage, will be held on May 21, 2017 at the El Matador Restaurants.
Out-of-state family attending are: his sister, Fran (Gene) Prescott, Tuscaloosa, Alabama; nephew, Rick (Sean), Lefebvre, Tomball, Texas; niece, Nancy (Bill) Harper, Guffey, Colorado and grand-nephew, Aaron (Michele) Harper, Matthew, North Carolina.
