Howard L. Fitzgerald (Fitz) was honored Saturday, October 21, 2017 on his 80th Birthday. Twenty-eight family members surprised him at Jeremiah's for dinner and visiting.
Special surprise guests were granddaughters, Breana Fitzgerald of Tucson, Arizona; and Devon Perry from Anchorage, Alaska, where her husband, MSgt. Matt Perry, serves in the Air Force.
Howard was an only child, born and raised in Farina, Illinois, and joined the Air Force after graduating from high school. He was stationed in England where he met, and married, Miriam Ann Fuell, on July 12, 1958. They had three children: Karen (Nelson), Bradley Fitzgerald, and Derek (Nan) Fitzgerald. They have four grandchildren: Breana Fitzgerald, Caden Fitzgerald, Nichole (Tony) Leavitt and Devon (Matt) Perry; three great-grandchildren: Braxton, Bridger and Brynlee Leavitt; and two step-grandchildren, Taylor Duffin and Shelby (Kelton) Johnson.
When he retired from the Air Force, as a Msgt. after 22 years of service, they moved to Layton. He managed Aladin's Castle in the Layton Mall and later was Regional Manager over four states until 1989.
He worked at Red Wing Shoes in Layton from 1990 to 2002 when he retired. He and "Midge" traveled a lot, often going back to England, hosting her family from England, enjoying their family...and a LOT of golf!
Miriam passed away September 4, 2011, after 53 years of marriage.
In 2013, he married Jan Olsen which added five more children to the family: Debby (Jon) Fox, Lisa (Carl) Rose, Lori (Stacey) Mascaro, Teri (Greg) Bennett and Scott Chalupa (Stacie); 13 grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren.
They enjoy traveling and enjoyed an Alaskan Cruise last June. Howard loves his morning breakfast at Dennys and, in their travels, he and Jan have been to Dennys in 16 states and Hawaii.
They reside in South Weber with their Shih Tzu 'child,' Tucker.
