Whatever type of Asian food you are craving — whether it is Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese or Thai — you are bound to find it at Maple Garden.
The original owner decided to retire after 32 years in business, and last October sold the restaurant to husband and wife, Linsheng Xu and HongYing Yu.
The Chinese natives had worked in restaurants in New York and California, and owned a restaurant in California prior to coming to Utah for this opportunity. When they took over ownership, they installed a completely new menu offering more variety.
“We wanted people to try something new,” Xu and Yu’s daughter Nicki Xu said. She works at the restaurant as a hostess and waitress.
However, many of the dishes that made the eatery a popular dining destination for the past three decades remain. For example, the Szechwan Chicken ($8.85), a slightly spicy dish with chunks of deep fried chicken, is the most popular item on the menu.
Other entrees that carried over include sweet and sour chicken ($8.85), broccoli beef ($9.95) and honey walnut shrimp ($10.25).
Maple Garden features a daily lunch special that includes an entrée, egg roll, fried rice and soup ($4.99), and customers may claim a free meal on their birthdays.
Yu mainly works the front of the house, serving as a waitress when things get busy. Husband Xu specializes in sushi.
Some of his favorite rolls include the Rainbow ($15.99), with salmon, tuna, yellowtail, shrimp, avocado and masago; the Alaska ($7.99), with salmon, cream cheese, masago, avocado, eel and spicy mayo; the Delicate ($9.99), with shrimp tempura, avocado, cream cheese, crab salad and eel sauce; the Las Vegas ($14.99), with shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, avocado, cream cheese, jalapeno, masago and chili sauce; and the Crunchy Crab ($5.99), with crab and cream cheese.
The Vietnamese noodle soup ($6.75) comes with choice of vegetables, chicken, beef, shrimp or a combination. Maple Garden also sells Thai cuisine such as Pad Thai ($7.75) and Singapore Rice Noodles ($7.55).
Bento Boxes have become one of their best sellers ($10.45). Diners customize their meal by choosing one of 10 entrees, an appetizer, a sushi roll and a type of rice, noodles or vegetable. Some entrée choices for the boxes include teriyaki chicken, Szechwan chicken, mango shrimp and red curry shrimp.
Other specialties on the menu are Asian Steak ($12.95), prepared with New York Strip, mushrooms and onions, and vegetarian friendly dishes such as spicy Thai red curry tofu ($7.75) and mixed vegetables ($7.75) with zucchini, carrots, broccoli, green peppers, onions and snow peas.
Most dishes can be prepared more or less spicy since the sauces are homemade. No MSG is used.
