Joan Rivers stops breathing during simple surgery in New York

Joan Rivers remains in a serious condition after she stopped breathing during a throat surgery in New York.

Rivers, 81, was undergoing a procedure on her vocal cords Thursday morning at Yorkville Endoscopy when she stopped breathing and was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital.

The comedy legend and "Fashion Police" host has been placed in a medically induced coma, according to news sources and other reports.

Joan Alexandra Molinsky, known by her stage name Joan Rivers, is an American actress, comedian, writer, producer and television host, best known for co-hosting the E! celebrity fashion show Fashion Police, the pre-Oscar red-carpet runway and the reality television show “Joan and Melissa” with her daughter Melissa Rivers.

Melissa Rivers has stated she is “overwhelmed with the outpouring of tributes and prayers from around the world.”
