Worth the Drive: Trail running competition, live music, dance class and more

Sometimes you’ve just got to get away — other times you want to, but don’t have the cash on hand to take a real weekend trip.

Thankfully, Northern Utah offers a happy medium, with lots of great events only a short drive away.

Want to get out of town without going too far? Check out one of these events around the state, including plenty of outdoorsy activities that will help you celebrate the end of summer.


Come and enjoy food, art, music and a great view of the starry night sky. The Red Cliff Ranch in Heber City is inviting you to enjoy the night, with art for sale by local artists, a cocktail hour and live music. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Kimball Art Center in Park City. For more information, call 435-649-8882.

The Icelandic singer and songwriter will bring his talents to The State Room in Salt Lake City. The Reykjavík native will bring his melodious folk to the stage and is sure to dazzle audiences.

Get ready to get festive for these charity races with a Christmas spin. Both 5K and 1K races and a silent auction will take place on Saturday morning. Proceeds will benefit the Christmas Box International, a nonprofit that helps kids who have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Come out and support a good cause in a festive environment. 

When: 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16

Where: Draper City Park, 12500 S. 1300 East, Draper

Cost: $10-30


The time is here once again for the XTERRA Trail Running National Championship, which will take place at Snowbasin Resort. Many of the country’s best trail runners will compete to see who will be crowned national champion. Runners of all skills are encouraged to compete in the race. Three courses will be available on race day: 21K, 5K and 1K. Be sure to come out and support the runners as they go head-to-head against others from around the world. 

When: 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 17

Where: Snowbasin Resort, 3925 E. Snowbasin Road, Huntsville

Cost: $30-65 to compete, free to watch


Head over to Wellsville and walk for a good cause. Help raise Down syndrome awareness while getting some exercise at the 40th annual Utah Down Syndrome Foundation Buddy Walk. The event will also include pony rides, game booths, food and much more. Get your team together and go support a great cause. 

When: 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16

Where: American West Heritage Center, 4025 S. Highway 89, Wellsville

Cost: $10-15


Whether you’re a fan of blues, Americana or just an energetic garage band, you will enjoy seeing Samantha Fish take the stage at The State Room in Salt Lake City. You won’t want to miss this show. 

When: 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17

Where: The State Room, 638 State St., Salt Lake City

Don’t miss out on your chance to learn the male-style "Malandro" samba at this Salt Lake City workshop. Men and women of all skillsets are invited to participate in these classes taught by Lorin Hansen, a recent international Malandro dance competition finalist. 

When: 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19
