Funeral for LDS apostle Robert D. Hales scheduled for Friday

SALT LAKE CITY — The funeral for Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will be held Friday, Oct. 6, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Tuesday.

Hales died Sunday, Oct. 1, between sessions of the faith’s General Conference at a hospital from causes “incident to age,” the church said in a news release. Several days prior to his death, the church said he wouldn’t attend conference while being treated for “pulmonary and other conditions.”

Funeral services will be at the Salt Lake Tabernacle on Temple Square at 11 a.m. and are open to the public for ages 8 and up, the church said in an announcement on Mormon Newsroom.

The services will be broadcast live on lds.org in English, Spanish and Portuguese, on KSL-TV, BYUtv and other church broadcast outlets.

For those who want to attend in person at the Tabernacle, doors open at 9:30 a.m. and attendees should be in their seats by 10:30 a.m. Other church offices will be closed from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Hales will be buried in a private ceremony following the funeral at Bountiful Memorial Cemetery. There will not be a public viewing, the church said.

In lieu of flowers, the church requests donations be made to its humanitarian aid fund or general missionary fund at give.lds.org/hales.
