In a scene from The Hunt Family "Miracle of Christmas" pageant, part of the Weber County Holiday Festival, actors playing Mary and Joseph, April and Garrett Tryon, are turned away from the inn during the 2014 event. Playing the inn-keeper is Hal Schneider. This year's pageant is set for 6:30 p.m., 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 20-23, at the Golden Spike Event Center, 1000 N. 1200 West in Ogden.
Organizers are raising funds to host the event that now is backed by a nonprofit agency, The Hunt Family Live Nativity Inc.
Due to the cancellation of the Weber County Holiday Festival — where the live Nativity was held for the past three years — the family will perform its story of the birth of Jesus Christ later in the month than before.
Performances of the live Nativity are scheduled for 6:30 p.m., 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. daily Dec. 20-23 at the Golden Spike Event Center, located at 1000 N. 1200 West.
“My family has been inundated by people who continue to think the Nativity has been canceled this year,” said Tammy Hunt, a spokesperson for the event.
Hunt said the family has faith that enough money will be raised to sponsor the event, even without the county backing it had before.
The family has formed a nonprofit agency tasked with raising the $10,000 needed to cover insurance and renting the event center this year.
An account at Goldenwest Credit Union is set up to collect donations.
“As we continue to grow, we rely more and more on the support and generous contributions of private individuals and businesses,” reads an announcement supporters now are sending out to people in the community.
Hunt said she already knew the event was popular. The family estimates 21,000 people attended last year.
Now that she’s received many phone calls from those who said they would be sad to see the event go away, Hunt said she is convinced the community is fully supportive of efforts to continue.
“It is always humbling to hear about how much it means to the thousands of people who have attended,” Hunt said. “Countless people and families have made it one of their treasured Christmas traditions.”
