Morgan High football preview: Trojans rebuild after season wrecked by injury

MORGAN — All it takes is one injury to wreck a season.

Morgan High quarterback Tucker Skinner suffered a high right ankle sprain during the playoffs last season, and the team’s hopes of a state championship came crashing down because of it.

Skinner’s injury came during Morgan’s 20-0 win over Manti in the 3-A quarterfinals. He managed to play the next week against Delta, but Trojans coach Kovi Christiansen said he was “probably about 45-50 percent.”

“He couldn’t push off,” Christiansen said.

Delta defeated Morgan 21-14 to advance to the 3-A championship against Juan Diego, a team Morgan obliterated 49-20 earlier in the season. Juan Diego defeated Delta for the championship.

“The last five years we’ve had some pretty bad luck when it comes to injuries and who gets injured,” Christiansen said. “Sometimes we’re a little deeper at other positions, but we weren’t very deep at that position last year. It’s kind of devastating when the wrong person gets injured.”

Heading into the 2017 season, depth is a concern across the board for the Trojans. Christiansen said last year’s team consisted of a lot of seniors.

“We’re not very deep this year, so we’re basically rebuilding and starting over,” Christiansen said.

The most high profile returner Christiansen has is Chase Trussell. Trussell, who will be a senior this year, has started since he was a sophomore. Last year he played on the offensive and defensive lines, but Christiansen said this year he will be used at tight end and running back and maybe linebacker on defense.

Christiansen praised his versatility, saying he can play “anywhere” that’s required.

Trussell is a defending two-time state wrestling champ. He won the title in the 195-pound division as a sophomore and then won the title in the 220-pound division as a junior.

Morgan also returns offensive lineman Dillon Petty as well as cornerbacks Jake Rounkles and Bridger Miller.

Jacob Stephens will probably be the team’s starting quarterback, Christiansen said.

“I always expect to win, but we’ve got some guys in some new positions and hopefully we pick up quick,” Christiansen said.

Although he lost a lot of seniors from last year’s team, Christiansen is optimistic about his group of sophomores.

“My sophomore group is really strong, so probably more so than any other year we’re going to have some sophomores out on the field,” Christiansen said. “Which is good and bad. They don’t have a lot of experience, but you’ve got to start somewhere, so by the time they’re seniors, that group’s going to have a lot of experience and playing time at the varsity level.”
