CLEARFIELD — At first glance, it may have seemed like a rather innocuous game scheduled between two fourth place teams on a small rectangular green artificial turf field in northern Davis County.
But dig deeper and you see that the winner of the Syracuse-Clearfield football game would gain no worse than a tie for the bigger prize in three weeks — a berth in the state 6-A tournament.
In a match up where both teams had identical season records and the same Region 1 slate, Syracuse raced to a huge half time lead and coasted to a 38-14 victory over Clearfield on Friday evening.
Quarterback Ty Metcalfe threw for two touchdowns and ran for a pair more in his second game back from a broken collarbone to lead the Titans’ (5-3 overall, 3-2 Region 1) attack.
“It comes down to the line is balling out and I love it,” Metcalfe said. “When the line plays good, it makes everything easier. And also, the coaches came up with a great game plan.”
Metcalfe scored on a 1-yard run midway through the first quarter and connected with Ty Burke for a 59-yard pass and run late in the period to give the Titans a 14-0 lead.
Unofficially, Burke finished with six catches for 203 yards and the touchdown.

Syracuse tacked on two more touchdowns in the second stanza on Metcalfe’s 27-yard completion to Cole Thompson and a 20-yard scamper by Cole Cheney to take a 28-7 advantage into the locker room.
Thompson totaled three catches and 62 yards in the last eight minutes of the second quarter.
A 1-yard sneak by Metcalfe with 4:04 left in the third closed out the Syracuse touchdown barrage and Kobe Carlson wrapped up the scoring with a 28-yard field goal in the fourth.
“I just want to win, that’s all I care about,” Metcalfe added, saying the collarbone is not an issue.
Clearfield’s (4-4, 2-3) first touchdown came on a 10-yard pass from Jaxon Mansfield to Devon Poll. Poll picked up 48 more yards on two receptions during a third quarter drive that ended in a 4-yard touchdown run by Mansfield.
