Prep Football Roundup: Morgan wins 3-A North outright with win over Union

MORGAN — Morgan rolled over Union 51-22 on Friday, clinching the 3-A North championship by posting an undefeated region season for the second year in a row.

Morgan (7-2, 5-0 3-A North) scored four rushing touchdowns, three passing touchdowns and one defensive touchdown on an interception return. The Trojans amassed 524 total yards: 281 yards in the air and 243 yards on the ground. 

Morgan was unable to convert several PATs. Carson Flitton, the Trojans’ place kicker, has an injured right leg and kicks with his non-dominant left leg.


PLEASANT VIEW — Austin Bartholomew threw six touchdown passes and Weber put the cherry on top of its outright Region 1 championship by blasting Layton and win its eighth straight game.

Bartholomew connected on a 60-yarder to Hudson Schenck to open the game, then threw two more to Schenck in the second quarter for Weber (8-1, 6-0 Region 1).

Brandt Opheikens hauled in two aerial scores and Colton Jones grabbed one. Garter Green added a 21-yard scoring run.

Austin Graham threw a touchdown pass to Ryan Burke to put Layton (0-9, 0-6) on the board in the third quarter.

Weber byes next week ahead of the playoffs. Layton finishes its season by hosting Roy in a non-region game Wednesday.

WOODS CROSS — Woods Cross took a 17-7 lead into halftime and added 20 second-half points to beat Box Elder (3-6, 0-4) and clinch a 5-A playoff spot.

Woods Cross (6-3, 2-2 Region 5) got two passing touchdowns and one rushing score from quarterback Carston Naegle, who filled in for an injured Ashton Fornelius.

Justice Samuelu added a touchdown on a 39-yard run from a fake punt. Tucker Goodfellow booted field goals from 41, 28 and 40 yards.

Box Elder (3-6, 0-4) passed for two scores and rushed for one.

Box Elder finishes its season by hosting a non-region game against Bonneville on Wednesday. Woods Cross hosts Northridge in a non-region bout.


GARLAND — Bear River scored a touchdown on five of its seven first-half drives to take a 34-0 halftime lead on the way to a huge homecoming win over Logan.

Bradey Brown started the scoring for Bear River (5-4, 2-3 Region 12) with a 1-yard dive at the 7:58 mark in the first quarter. Six other Bears scored touchdowns on the night.

The Bears piled up 422 total yards, while holding Logan (1-8, 0-5) to 128 total yards — only 1 yard rushing — and four first downs.

Bear River hosts Ogden in a non-region game Wednesday to finish the regular season. The Bears will be Region 12’s four-seed in the 4-A state playoffs.


RANDOLPH — Layton Christian scored four touchdowns in the second quarter on the way to a region road romp at Rich.

LCA (6-3, 2-0 1-A North) got three touchdowns from Dustin Moffo of 35, 48 and 65 yards. Jaice Holt tossed two touchdown passes to Isaac Kelly from 20 and 40 yards out.

Ryleigh McCombs added a 3-yard touchdown scamper in the third quarter and Isaac Kelly booted a 24-yard field goal in the fourth.

Rich (2-6, 0-2) scored a touchdown in the second and fourth quarters.

Layton Christian travels to play Duchesne on Wednesday in a game that will decide the 1-A North championship.
