It might feel like the round of a lifetime, but if her family is any indication, there could very well be more to come from Davis High’s Caylyn Ponich.
The freshman golfer, 15, set a women’s course record by firing an 8-under 64 at Glen Eagle Golf Club in Syracuse during a Region 2 match Wednesday.
“I have never played better in my life,” Caylyn said. “I made the most putts I ever have. I one-putted a bunch of times.”
In the first 18-hole match of the Region 2 season, Caylyn eagled the par-five third hole (385 yards) to jumpstart her round, added six birdies and did not bogey, Davis coach Lori Salvo said.
Her brother, Cole, is a Davis sophomore currently committed to golf at UCLA. Caylyn said she started golfing at 5 or 6 years old after watching her brother play.
Mike Garrison, Glen Eagle’s head professional, confirmed her score as a new course record from the red tees typically used by women.
From holes 12 to 17, Caylyn completed six straight holes in three strokes, four of which earned birdies.
Caylyn said she bested the field by seven shots, topping West’s Whitney Banz who earned second place with a 1-under 71.
She said this was her seventh or eighth time playing Glen Eagle.
