Davis County Fair Demolition Derby...
FARMINGTON — It is no accident Davis County has put up another $4,000 in prize money in an effort to lure demolition derby drivers to participate in its annual event.
The bump over last year’s earnings will boost the payout to drivers competing in the Davis County Fair’s annual derby from $14,000 to $18,000 this year, Legacy Events Center Director Dave Hansen said.
“We want the drivers to show up,” Hansen said of the purpose behind increasing the prize money.
For years the county has been on the lower end of the scale when it comes to prize money for winning drivers, Hansen said.
The derby is scheduled at 8 p.m. Aug. 13, at the Events Center grounds, 151 S. 1100 West, Farmington.
The County Commission recently approved a contract with Intrepid Motor Sports of Roy to conduct the event.
Intrepid Motor Sports will receive from the county a fee of $4,000, said Mike VanAlfen, owner of Intrepid Motor Sports.
VanAlfen said he organizes the demolition derby events out of his love for the sport, and he is pleased to see that Davis County has increased its prize money.
The demolition derby business can be very competitive, with roughly 50 different derby events being held throughout the state over the summer months, he said.
“We have had to jump the money up to even compete,” said VanAlfen, who has 30 years experience in organizing demolition derbies, 20 of those years with the Davis County Fair’s annual event.
Last year the county fair was able to attract about 30 drivers, he said. There have been some years when they have had as few as 13 drivers, making it difficult to put on a good show.
The rising cost of junked vehicles limits the availability of affordable derby cars, VanAlfen said, making it difficult for some drivers to compete.
