OGDEN — Weber County Commissioner Kerry Gibson, who announced his resignation Tuesday to take a job with the state, is the target of an active police investigation.
“Ogden Police were contacted by Weber County officials to conduct an independent investigation on their behalf,” Croyle said, adding that because the investigation is active, “no further details are available at this time.”
The news surprised Gibson, who recently accepted a deputy director position with the Utah Department of Natural Resources and said Tuesday that his last day as a commissioner would be Jan. 12, 2018. He’s finishing his second term as county commissioner and has served seven years in that role.
“I have no idea what’s going on. I’m trying to figure it out right now,” he said Wednesday night. He said he hasn’t been contacted by police in the matter.
Reached by phone Wednesday night, Weber County Commission Chairman James Ebert said that any type of allegations against an employee would be investigated by an outside source.
“Weber County confirms that Ogden City is investigating a county employee and due to the sensitive nature of these types of investigations, we would defer to Ogden City for any release of information,” Ebert said. “We want to make sure that we don’t try any individual in the court of public opinion until the investigative agency has finished their work.”
Jim Harvey, the third Weber County commissioner, said he heard of a possible investigation involving a county employee from the Weber County Attorney’s Office, but didn’t know who the focus was, nor the spur.
“I’m sorry, but I do not know who sought it or why,” he said.
Officials from the Weber County Attorney’s Office didn’t immediately return a call Wednesday seeking comment.
Gibson, who also operates a dairy farm, according to his county bio, served in the Utah House before being elected to the county commission.
