A cat's brutal death — a Standard-Ex reader conversation

Saturday , March 11, 2017 - 5:30 AM2 comments

GREG HALLING, Standard-Examiner Staff

Somehow, Sage made it back to his Clearfield family after someone tortured him, breaking his paws, shattering his ribs, shaving his whiskers and smearing glue into his coat.

But the gray and white tabby died Thursday, the following day, at a Salt Lake City animal hospital.

Here’s how readers reacted to the story when we shared it on Facebook. All quotes are verbatim:

Melanie Tornbom: It's probably someone in their neighborhood since the poor thing crawled home. Utah's animal abuse laws are too lienent. May this psycho rot in hell!

Carolyn Sanchez: I'm so sad for the family and this innocent animal, no living creature deserves to be so mistreated! I hope they get the sick people or person that did such a horrible thing, and send them to prison!

Kitty Kovach: So, so sad to read what poor Sage endured @ the hands of someone in the neighborhood. At least he made it back to the home where he knew he was loved & is no longer in pain. I'm glad this is getting so much coverage & hope that helps to find the monster(s) who committed such depravity.

Marie Sendejo: I'm in tears reading this. My heart hurts for this poor kitty that suffered such a horrible act. I hope those terrible people that did this are found and convicted. Just imagine that a person is out there in our community doing this to animals. Wonder how they are to actual people.

Whitney Silva: Saddest thing ever! I'm so sorry for your loss. I can't even imagine. I recently took in an older cat that was homeless & deathly skinny. He's now an inside cat spoiled, happy & fat. I can sense who ever owned him abused him from his behavior & scars which makes me angry that any one would ever be so cruel & do that to such a sweet cat. I hope you find who ever did this!

Welton Dale Howell: Whoever did this lives nearby. The poor baby couldn't have made it very far. Use your suspicions and intuition. You can find them.

Terry Hanney Hampton: The person or person who did this needs to be severely punished. My heart aches for this fur baby and his family. It's a sad sad world.

Anthony P. Amman: Someone knows who is responsible for this and they need to come forward.

Animal abuse is a felony now.

Could be someone's kid next time.

Kirsten Kris Stuart: Sad but true. The extent that these awful people went to to hurt this cat is almost scary that they're out there to do god-knows-what to someone or something else.

Tu Mami: I don't like cats. With that being said.. whoever did this to this poor cat need to die in jail. We all know people who are abusive to animals tend to have psychopathic tendencies. I would not risk it. Just saying! No but seriously I hope they get the person who did this and get them some serious psychological help. I cant even imagine what is going through a persons mind in order to be able to do this!

Stephen W. DeBusk: Doing something like this while young, is an early indication that you're dealing with a budding sociopath. You could very well have a Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy in the making in your neighborhood.

Alicia Miller: Omg so sad for the family, I hope the demented person that did this is caught.

Julie Lindsey-Jasper: Please keep your cats inside, there are just too many bad things out there.

Meg Sanders: This is simply terrible. Between this awful crime and the horse shot in West Haven, there are clearly some sick folks in Northern Utah.
