ROY-- Almost anyone who hoped Roy was going to roll over Clearfield on Friday evening was all wet, which meant nearly everyone in a rain-drenched season opener for both schools.

In the end, home-town expectations played out as Roy rocked the Falcons 49-21 in the mud and the sludge and the ooze.

“I was pleased with how we played for the first game of the year, but we still have a lot of work to do,” said Roy coach Fred Fernandes. “Clearfield's speed exposed some things we need to fix, but for a season opener I'm pleased.”

Tyler Skidmore threw for three touchdown passes, including a pair to tight end Cody Hobbs, while junior running back Matty Matautia scored on runs of five and four yards.

"We got a lot of guys involved tonight. Skid can spread it around and got the ball to a lot of kids and threw for a high percentage and makes the offense go,” Fernandes said.

After a slow first quarter, the Royals knocked down the door with 21 points in the second stanza, starting with a score to Hobbs and a five yard burst by Baby Tee Eteuati.

Nate Jones got an interception for the only turnover by the defense, then got on the scoreboard with a six yarder from Skidmore.

Roy closed out its scoring on an eight-yard run by Jaden Brown before Clearfield answered with its second big play of the game.

Deondre Hambric returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards to the house, outdistancing and 87-yard touchdown he carried in from Jace Haney earlier in the second half.

This game marked the coaching debut of Andre Dyson, who has a rebuilding job to do for the Falcons.

“I thought it was terrible,” Dyson said. “I did a bad job preparing the kids. We couldn't stop them on defense except for a fumble. But we will learn from our mistakes and learn from it. There will be trials and tribulations but will build on it going forward.”
