Roy football jumps in rankings for prep teams, week of Sept. 21

Wednesday , September 23, 2015 - 11:17 AM

As northern Utah high school athletes head into the thick of their 2015 seasons, football, girls soccer and volleyball rankings are shaping up to show quite a few undefeated teams.

NOTE: Rankings include results as of Sunday, Sept. 20. Only schools from the Standard-Examiner’s area of coverage are considered in the weekly rankings.

FOOTBALL

1. Sky View (5-0)
LAST WEEK: Defeated Clearfield 35-0
NOTE: Sky View gets to stay undefeated, Clearfield gets to brag about finally holding an opponent under 40. Sounds like a win-win.

2. Davis (5-0)
LAST WEEK: Won at West 41-17
NOTE: Davis scoring 34 straight against West was expected. Just maybe not after falling behind 10-7.

3. Roy (3-1)
LAST WEEK: Won at Fremont 19-15
NOTE: Fremont coach Kory Bosgieter wasn’t buying when Roy coach Fred Fernandes said his team could start 0-8 just as well as it could start 8-0. Now we know why.

GIRLS SOCCER

1. Davis (10-0-0)
LAST WEEK: Won at Layton 2-1
NOTE: Davis was inexplicably not the top-ranked team in Utah according to a recent MaxPreps poll. The defending 5-A champion Darts weren’t even second. If the girls on the team care about such things, you can’t help but pity Granger, West and Hunter (Davis’ next three opponents).

2. Fremont (10-0-1)
LAST WEEK: Won at Roy 3-0, Defeated Clearfield 6-0
NOTE: There’s a strong possibility the Region 1 title will be decided this week when Weber travels to Fremont. It’s the only game the Silver Wolves have this week to focus on.

3. Weber (10-0-1)
LAST WEEK: Defeated Northridge 2-0, Defeated Sky View 3-0
NOTE: Weber hasn’t allowed a goal in three straight games.

VOLLEYBALL

1. Morgan (12-0)
LAST WEEK: Won at Juan Diego 3-0
NOTE: Region play is going to be nothing more than a glorified exhibition for Morgan. Can we just fast forward to the state championship?

2. Northridge (18-4)
LAST WEEK: Won at Weber 3-0, Defeated Fremont 3-1
NOTE: No real trouble against two solid region foes last week, and no question Northridge is the top team in Region 1 right now.

3. Davis (15-7)
LAST WEEK: Defeated West 3-0, Won at Layton 3-0
NOTE: Davis appears to have a stranglehold on Region 2. A game at Viewmont on Sept. 29 will decide that for certain.
