BRIGHAM CITY — Brock Hardy tries not to think about the potential of an undefeated season.

As much success as the Box Elder High junior has enjoyed so far in his high school career, it’s the one accomplishment that has proven elusive.

After Hardy’s performance at this weekend’s annual Richardson Memorial wrestling tournament, he’s still on track to change that.

Hardy, a two-time defending 4-A state champion, improved to 27-0 with a 21-8 major decision over Bear River’s Cooper Skinner in the championship match in the 152-pound division Saturday, Jan. 7.

“I’m just surging on,” Hardy said.

Skinner won the 3-A state title in the 138-pound division last year and entered Saturday’s championship match with just one loss on his record this season.

“Cooper’s a stud,” Hardy said. “He was really, really aggressive, and I knew that was coming. So I just had to be really good with my counterattacks, and as soon as he started to slow down, I just had to keep attacking.”

Hardy was the individual star of the tournament, but Layton proved to be the team.

Six Lancers advanced to the championship round, and five came away victorious. Layton won the tournament with a team score of 213.5, topping second-place Bear River by 14.5 points.

Dalton Stutzman, Tyson Humpherys, Terrell Barraclough, Tanner Benedict and Austin Clem all took first for Layton.

Barraclough defeated Fremont’s Kegan Leatherow in a rematch of last year’s 5-A championship in the 113-pound division. The two were paired up against each other in the 120-pound division Saturday.

Humpherys defeated Box Elder’s Garrett Ricks in the 113-pound division. Ricks won the 4-A state title last year in the 106-pound division.

Viewmont’s Shion Abe defeated two-time 3-A champion Holden Richards from Bear River in the 132-pound division, while Weber’s Hunter Larsen defeated Bear River’s Jordan Watson in the 220-pound division. Watson was a 3-A finalist a year ago.
