SYRACUSE — Gabby Segura will soon be able to sport a region champion shirt, but immediately following Syracuse High’s girls soccer game Thursday against Layton, she was sporting a bloody nose.

“I may or may not have gotten punched in the face by my best friend celebrating,” Syracuse’s senior goalkeeper said after her team’s 4-1 victory that clinched the Region 1 title. “Shoutout to Kenadee Arigot.”

All’s OK when it comes to celebrating.

“It’s a bummer it had to be on senior night, but I guess that makes the memories even sweeter, right?” Segura said.

For Segura, this is a pretty sweet moment. Three years ago, she was a freshman watching her team get battered game after game. Syracuse won just one region game that year.

Enter Taylor Allen — a 2004 graduate of Northridge High — who arrived as the team’s head coach the following year. The Titans instantly became competitive, winning 14 region games and qualifying for the playoffs in Allen’s first two years. This year, they’ve scored a region-high 64 goals while allowing a region-low 15.

“We want Syracuse to be a soccer community,” Allen said. “I always thought the talent was there, it was just buying in, and the girls, they freaking bought in.

“I hate to say this because we hate Davis so much, but we strive to be like them. They built a soccer community at Davis High and (head coach) Souli (Phongsavath) did a good job of that and people knew Davis for girls soccer.

“We want that to be here at Syracuse and we want people to say Syracuse is a good team and a good program and we want girls that live in this (school’s) boundaries to say, ‘Yeah, we’re going to play high school there.’”

By now, everyone knows about Caroline Stringfellow, Syracuse’s phenom freshman who has scored 21 goals this season, but the Titans continue to prove how deep they are.

Junior Lexi Chenoweth scored her first two goals of the season Thursday, meaning 14 Titans have now scored this season. She scored both goals in the first half — first in the 10th minute, then in 37th.

“I had a feeling today,” Chenoweth said. “We were watching film during lunch … I was like, ‘Guys, today is my day. I’m going to score my goal.’”

Ashlyn Hall scored twice as well against the Lancers, bringing her season total to 16. Her first goal came in the 20th minute and answered a goal by Layton’s Corinne Case in the 11th minute. She scored again in the 64th minute.

“I think we broke last time,” Allen admitted, referencing Layton’s 3-1 win over Syracuse earlier in the season. “We scored first and then they scored and we broke.

“We talked about if you’re going to own being a region (champion) and being a No. 1 seed, you have to break other teams. The second half, you felt Layton break a little bit. They just kept boom-balling it.”

Syracuse players could have been despondent following the team’s 2-1 extra-time loss at Davis on Tuesday, but Hall said the result did more to motivate the team than deflate it.

“I think it did because we saw what we could do, even though we lost, and were able to use that to push us and become even better than we were,” Hall said.
