OGDEN — Josh Burger returned from a broken collarbone to hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning and lift Utah Military Academy to a 6-5 win over Merit Academy in the 2-A baseball quarterfinals Tuesday.
Burger had two hits, including a game-tying hit in the bottom of the fourth.
Merit jumped out to an early 5-1 lead but Utah Military rallied with three runs in the bottom of the third before tying the game in the fourth.
Utah Military totaled 10 hits while limiting Merit to just three. Koby Battema pitched all eight innings for the Thunderbirds and struck out eight.
Utah Military will play Wasatch Academy in the semifinals Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Serge Simmons Field.
Utah Military finished its regular season schedule last week with two wins and two losses. The Thunderbirds defeated Maeser Prep (13-12) and Merit (11-6) but lost to Rockwell twice. Rockwell won the first game 16-6 and then won the second 14-0.
ST. JOSEPH 17, AMERICAN PREP-WEST VALLEY 0
St. Joseph advanced to the 2-A semifinals with a thumping of American Prep-West Valley.
The Jayhawks produced 16 hits. Pierson Wade went 3 for 3 with a double, Nolan Phillips went 3 for 4 with four stolen bases and Daniel Romero went 2 for 4 with a double.
Nick Snell started for the Jayhawks and struck out five while allowing four hits in three innings. Nick Garcia and Phillips each pitched an inning and each struck out three.
St. Joseph will face region champion Rockwell Friday at noon at Serge Simmons Field. The winner will play in the championship against the winner between Utah Military and Wasatch Academy Saturday at noon at Serge Simmons Field.
St. Joseph also concluded its season last week with two wins and two losses. The Jayhawks defeated Maeser Prep (26-14) and American Prep-West Valley (22-4) but lost to Wasatch Academy (5-4) and Rockwell (21-8).
