LAYTON — The Layton High volleyball team rallied from a 12-6 deficit in the fourth set to defeat Northridge, then went on to beat the Knights in five Monday to clinch a playoff spot from Region 1.

Layton lost two of the first three sets before falling behind 12-6 in the fourth. The Lancers then went on a 14-3 run and ultimately won the set 25-21.

Layton won the fifth set 15-12.

The Lancers will enter the 6-A state tournament as the third seed. Northridge and Davis, which finished the season tied for fourth place, will meet in a play-in game Tuesday for the region’s final playoff spot. The time and location of the play-in was not immediately available.

Five-set matches have been common for Layton the second half of region play. Five of its last six region matches have gone to five sets. The Lancers have won four of them.

“Giving everybody their money’s worth,” Layton coach Art McCarty said.

Layton won Monday on the strength of its best hitting performance of the season. The Lancers hit .241. Suzanne Katoa recorded 20 kills and hit .280, while Maci Harrop tallied 14 kills and hit .263.

Mallory Anderson led Layton’s defensive effort with 23 digs.

“I think tonight we did really good about not getting down about our mistakes, because we’ve struggled with that in the past,” Anderson said.
