PREP VOLLEYBALL: Northridge pulls off first-round shocker at 6-A tournament

OREM — The Northridge High volleyball team, the fourth seed from Region 1, swept Region 3 top seed Copper Hills in the first round of the 6-A tournament before falling to Bingham Thursday at Utah Valley University’s UCCU Center.

Northridge defeated Copper Hills 25-18, 27-25, 25-22 and then lost to Bingham 20-25, 17-25, 22-25.

Northridge will face Region 1 champion Syracuse in the single-loss semifinals Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the winner advancing to the fifth-place game at 2 p.m.

Syracuse defeated West Jordan in four sets before getting swept by Pleasant Grove Thursday.

Syracuse beat West Jordan 24-26, 25-14, 25-11, 25-11 and lost to Pleasant Grove 22-25, 11-25, 9-25.

Fremont also picked up a first-round victory Thursday, defeating Riverton in straight sets. Fremont won 25-11, 25-13, 25-20. The Silver Wolves then lost to Lone Peak 14-25, 15-25, 19-25.

Fremont will face either American Fork or Herriman in the single-loss semis Saturday at 12:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to face either Syracuse or Northridge for fifth place.

Layton lost in straight sets to Herriman (17-25, 16-25, 12-25) but then swept Granger (25-16, 25-18, 25-12).

Layton will face Riverton in the consolation semifinals Saturday at 9 a.m. with the winner advancing to the sixth-place game at 2 p.m.
