AJ Juarez (23), of St. Joseph, causes a loose ball while defending Ben Lomond player, Juan Espinoza (2), at Ben Lomond High School, in Ogden, on Wednesday, December 6, 2017.
OGDEN — Garet Rentmeister got hit in the eye and had a basketball tipped off his face early in the second quarter.
The St. Joseph defense felt the pain of watching Rentmeister drain shot after shot in the period and Ben Lomond went on to drub the Jayhawks 72-34.
The sharpshooting sophomore scored 14 of his team-high 22 points in the second period, punctuating the effort with a steal and a layup in the final seconds.
“I was just feeling it,” Rentmeister said. “I just kept shooting. I was just feeling it tonight.”
The victory, Ben Lomond’s first of the season, turned out to be a lot easier than it looked like it might be in the first quarter. Ben Lomond had just three points through the first five minutes of the period before closing the quarter on a 10-2 run.
Rentmeister scored five straight early in the second quarter to give the Scots a 20-7 lead and start a 25-3 run. Ben Lomond outscored St. Joseph 31-7 in the second quarter to build a commanding 44-12 halftime advantage.
“Our offense really started to find rhythm once we picked it up defensively,” Ben Lomond coach Kable Smith said. “We thought we could pressure them. We want to play with a faster tempo and we haven’t done it as well as we wanted, but tonight it worked out for us.”
The Scots continued to dominate throughout the second half. They went on a 10-0 run in the third period and a 9-0 run in the fourth to balloon their lead to as large as 44.
Titus Hughes and Alex Christofferson each added eight points for Ben Lomond, while Andrew Ormond and Stephon Watson scored six each.
