Prep Roundup: Ben Lomond soccer falls to Juan Diego at home

Friday , April 06, 2018 - 9:32 PM

OGDEN — Juan Diego scored a goal in each half to hand Ben Lomond a 2-0 loss Friday at home.

Juan Diego scored in the first half as Gustavo Flores stabbed the ball into an empty net.

Ben Lomond had chances to score late, as Alfredo Barrandey and Freddy Cano both saw their shots saved. Early in the second half and trailing 1-0, Barrandey had a free kick from about 20 yards out that just missed going into the top left corner.

Erik Arroyo, who is usually not the Scots’ goalkeeper, made several saves in the second half to keep Ben Lomond within striking distance. But Juan Diego was awarded a free kick on a breakaway right outside the penalty box, and Jered Mariani stepped up and scored to put the Soaring Eagle ahead 2-0.

The Scots came closest to scoring in the first half. Ben Lomond had two free kicks that bounced between several players in the penalty box before Juan Diego defenders cleared the ball.

Friday’s loss dropped Ben Lomond to 3-3 in Region 11, putting the Scots in fifth place halfway through the region schedule, one game ahead of Stansbury (2-4). The schedule doesn’t let up for Ben Lomond the next two games as the Scots travel to region leaders Park City on Wednesday before hosting Bonneville (3-1) on April 16.

TOOELE — Ogden led 1-0 at the half, then added three scores after the break to claim a region road win at Tooele.

Tony Barragan, Jace Bauer, Daniel Wilson and Isaac Wilson each found the back of the net for the Tigers. Omar Flores assisted Barragan’s first half score and J.J. Muniz assisted on all three second-half goals.

The win lifted Ogden (4-3 Region 11) into a tie for second place in Region 11 with Juan Diego.

BRIGHAM CITY — Mitchell Pyle tallied a hat trick and Steve Handy added a fourth goal as Box Elder beat Cottonwood in a non-region contest.

Pyle and Handy scored in the first half as the Bees led 2-1 at halftime. Pyle netted two goals in the second half.

KAYSVILLE — Stockton Hall picked up the win as Davis beat O'Gorman (South Dakota) in the Bishop Gorman Desert Classic at Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS — Clearfield scored six runs in the fourth inning but it wasn’t enough as the Falcons fell to Bellflower (California) in the Bishop Gorman Desert Classic at Las Vegas.

Jake Angelico tripled and Connor Coleman added a double for Clearfield. Dougrey Humphrey took the loss.

PARK CITY — Ben Lomond led 1-0 after the first inning, but Park City scored five runs over the next four innings, then plated six in the bottom of the sixth to end the region contest by run rule.

Zane Espinoza doubled in the first, then moved to third on a Connor Walton single to account for all of Ben Lomond’s (0-9 Region 11) hits. Espinoza scored on a Brady Walling sacrifice fly.

SALT LAKE CITY — Judge Memorial completed a three-game sweep of Morgan (0-6 Region 13) Friday. The game was moved to Salt Lake City due to bad field conditions at Morgan High.

Luke Borgmeier struck out 13 batters for Judge, which scored five runs in the first inning and six more in the fourth.

Morgan scored its lone run in the fourth inning. Porter Brenchley had a base hit for the Trojans.
