Prep Roundup: Layton boys soccer wins Region 1; track, golf, tennis results

LAYTON — In a game delayed by lightning late in the second half, Layton boys soccer broke a 1-1 halftime tie with a score in the second stanza and clinched the Region 1 championship at home against Davis.

Brendan Stansfield scored for Layton (11-2-1, 10-1-1 Region 1) in the first half, assisted by Christian Logan. Leo Urrutia netted in the second half on an assist from Takum Hepworth. The Lancers will host American Fork, the Region 4 four-seed, on Tuesday to open the 6A playoffs.

Davis (11-5, 7-5) enters the 6A tournament as the three-seed and will play at Westlake on Tuesday.


SYRACUSE — Weber broke open a scoreless game with four second-half goals in a region win at Syracuse

Weber (12-3, 10-2 Region 1) got goals from Colby Lee, Eric Morris, Pierce Callister and Austin Allen, who scored on a direct kick after being fouled. Max Price tallied two assists and Callister one. Charlie Wheelwright earned the shutout.

The Warriors will enter the 6A state tournament as Region 1’s two-seed and will host Region 4 three-seed Bingham on Tuesday.

The loss ends the season for Syracuse (5-10-1, 3-8-1).


LAYTON — Fremont (5-9-2, 4-7-1 Region 1) and Northridge (4-6-4, 4-6-2) played to a draw in the final game of Region 1 action.

The result ends Fremont’s season and gives Northridge the region’s four-seed. The Knights will play at Pleasant Grove in the 6A first round Tuesday.

SYRACUSE — Clearfield trailed 6-5 after five innings, then scored three runs to take the lead for good in a region win at Syracuse.

Ty Witt recorded the win for Clearfield (13-11, 11-7 Region 1). Logan Mower, Taylor Sato and Chandler Kotter each hit a double for the Falcons. As the two-seed in Region 1, Clearfield will host Region 4 three-seed Pleasant Grove at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 15.

Zac Schofield and Rudy Casias hit doubles for Syracuse, and Casias took the loss. The Titans end the season at 8-17 overall, 7-11 in region play.


LAYTON — Northridge took a 4-1 lead into the sixth, then broke the game open with four runs in the sixth for a region win over Layton.

Paul Fomby led Northridge (13-11, 10-8 Region 1) with a double and a home run, driving in four. Scott Daybell and Stockton Cleverly combined to go 4 for 4 with three runs scored. Ryker Kap hit a two-run double. Kap and Drew West combined for a one-hitter with Kap picking up the win.

The Knights will travel to play at Region 4 two-seed American Fork on Tuesday in the first round of the 6A state playoffs.

Micah Del Rio hit a two-run home run for Layton (11-15, 6-12), whose season ended with the loss.


WOODS CROSS — Woods Cross scored four in the fourth inning for the win.

Tanner Wilkins hit a two-run single to put Woods Cross (7-18, 4-8 Region 5) ahead. Brock Simmons pitched a complete game for the Wildcats

Mason Farr took the loss for Bountiful (6-20, 4-8).

Bountiful will host Woods Cross in a tie-breaker game for the Region 5 four-seed at 4 p.m. Friday. The winner will travel to Olympus to face the Region 6 champions Tuesday in the first round of the 5A playoffs.


ROY — Roy scored three runs in the sixth inning to force a run-rule shortened win over Box Elder (11-13, 6-6 Region 5) in six innings. The Royals (9-11, 5-7) clinched the No. 3 seed from Region 5 and will play at Murray on Tuesday in the 5A playoffs.

Jaxson Dart, Jack Hulce and Brody Perkes each drove in two runs for Roy as Wade Rogers tossed a six-inning complete game.

Box Elder, the region’s second seed, will host the Region 6 three-seed on Tuesday.



PLEASANT VIEW — Clearfield scored six runs in the third inning in a five-inning shutout at Weber.

Jessie Golder led Clearfield (16-9, 7-5 Region 1) at the plate, batting 3 for 4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Kaycee Valencia went 4 for 4 with one RBI and one run scored.

Brynnley Christiansen hit a double and drove in three. Peri Winterbottom and Macy Benincosa each had two hits. Braxtyn Haynes scattered two hits over five innings, striking out five Warriors.

Clearfield finish Region 1 play tied with Davis and Fremont for third place. Clearfield will host Fremont in a play-in game at 3:30 p.m. Friday. The winner will secure the three-seed and play at Hunter on Tuesday. The loser’s season will be over.

Baylee Blanchard and Megan Bull tallied hits in the season finale for Weber (5-16, 1-11).


SYRACUSE — Fremont took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, when Syracuse scored four runs for the win over Fremont.

Ashtyn Bauerle pitched a complete game three-hitter for Syracuse (15-9, 10-2 Region 1). Megan Poll hit a solo home run. Ashlee Schriever went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Kemri Curtis batted 2 for 4.

Syracuse enters the 6A state tournament as Region 1’s top seed. They will host the four-seed from Region 4 on Tuesday, May 15.

Ashtyn Meibos hit an RBI double and scored a run for Fremont (10-14, 7-5). Brianna George and Hunter Pales each hit an RBI single.

The Silver Wolves end Region 1 play in a three-way tie for third place with Clearfield and Davis. Fremont will play a tie-breaker at Clearfield at 3:30 p.m. Friday.


KAYSVILLE — Layton scored six runs across the third and fourth inning in the region win.

Jaci Gold hit a double for Layton (13-8, 9-3 Region 1) and picked up the win in the circle. The Lancers, Region 1’s two-seed, will host Region 4’s three-seed at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Carli Crowshaw hit a three-run home run for Davis (15-8, 7-5). Mia Cullimore took the loss. The Darts ended Region 1 play in a three-way tie for third place with Clearfield and Fremont. As a result of a coin flip, the Darts will enter the state playoffs as the four-seed and will visit the Region 4 one-seed on Tuesday.


WOODS CROSS — Bountiful (21-4, 10-2 Region 5) hit four home runs in a win at Woods Cross. McHailee Danner drove in three on two big flies. Libbie Hawker batted 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs. Livi Arona blasted a solo shot. Danner recorded the win in the circle.

The Braves won the Region 5 championship outright and will host the four-seed from Region 6 on Tuesday, May 15.

Niki Golightly got the only hit for Woods Cross (4-16, 3-9). Jade Valdez took the loss. The Wildcats will trave to face Region 6’s one-seed on Tuesday.


BRIGHAM CITY — Box Elder used a seven-run third inning to beat Roy.

Brylee Marziale hit 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to pace Box Elder (19-6, 9-3 Region 5). Nyah DeRyke hit 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Reagan Marziale added a two-run double. Box Elder enters the 5A state tournament as the two-seed and will host the Region 6 three-seed on Tuesday.

Mia Fernandez batted 2 for 4 with a double for Roy (14-11, 8-4). Palmer hit a two-run single. The Royals are Region 5’s three-seed and will travel to face Region 6’s two-seed Tuesday.



The Bountiful boys and Box Elder girls won their respective Region 5 championships Thursday at Woods Cross High. Box Elder won the overall title, beating Bountiful 362-318.

Stansbury won the boys region title and Park City won the girls region title. The Bonneville boys team finished in second place and the Lakers’ girls team took third. Ogden’s boys took third and the girls finished fourth.

Bonneville No. 2 singles player Brecken Benard and No. 3 singles player Andrew McCall advanced to Saturday’s semifinals in the 4A state tennis tournament.

Benard beat Mountain View’s Landon Kunz 6-1, 6-1 in the first round before outlasting Mountain Crest’s Adam Nasar 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Benard takes on Orem’s Christian Craig in Saturday’s semifinal.

McCall dispatched Sky View’s Ethan McCombs 6-1, 6-0 in the first round and followed that with a 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-0 win against Salem Hills’ Booker Ward in the quarters. McCall will face Erik Ellis from Ridgeline in the semis.

Caden Heaton fell in the quarterfinals of the No. 1 singles bracket, Ogden’s Cooper Jones suffered a first-round exit from the No. 2 singles bracket and the Tigers’ Luke Davis fell in the first round of the third singles bracket.

Both Bonneville doubles teams fell in the first round. Bonneville sits in fifth place as a team after the first day with five points. Orem leads the scoring with 10.



Morgan’s girls golf team took second place at the 3A state tournament this week in Richfield. The Trojans accumulated a team score of 739. Richfield won the tournament with a score of 668.

Averi Vaughan shot 174 over the two days and finished in 11th place. Morgan teammates Bailee Wright and Lauren Telford finished 12th and 13th, respectively. Richfield’s Hayden Harris won the individual tournament with a score of 158.


Layton Christian’s girls golf team edged St. Joseph by nine strokes to finish in third place at this week’s 2A state golf championships at Rose Park in Salt Lake City.

Faith Meza shot 98 and finished in eighth place individually for LCA. Emma Dulaney from St. Joseph shot 103 and took 10th place.


Bountiful won the Region 5 girls golf championship Tuesday held at Schneiter’s Bluff. The Braves had 36 points ahead of Box Elder’s 20 points in second place. Woods Cross had 18 points, Viewmont had 16 and Roy had zero.

Bountiful’s Vanna Einerson was the low medalist.

The All-Region team is as follows: Jobi Einerson (Bountiful), Liz Ward (Bountiful), Megan Van Leeuwen (Bountiful), Sadee Pack (Bountiful), Draygen Taylor (Box Elder), Talia Jackson (Woods Cross), Krista Glauser (Box Elder), Shay Shaw (Roy), Abi Clemons (Woods Cross), Kenna Morris (Viewmont) and Tallie Mortensen (Viewmont).
