Prep Roundup: Morgan boys soccer advances to 3A title game with win

SANDY — Morgan booked a ticket to Saturday’s 3A boys soccer state championship game with a 3-2 win over American Leadership Academy in the semifinals Friday night at Alta High.

ALA took an immediate 1-0 lead, then Inigo Polo Lopez fired home the equalizer in the fourth minute. He scored his second after he rounded the keeper on a breakaway in the 17th minute.

Breckyn Bond’s header in the 23rd minute made it a 3-1 halftime advantage for the Trojans.

ALA scored on a free kick from just outside the penalty box in the 67th minute to cut the lead to 3-2 and set up a nervous final 13 minutes of the game.

WATERFORD 0 (4), LAYTON CHRISTIAN 0 (3)

Waterford ended Layton Christian’s undefeated season by beating the Eagles 4-3 in a penalty shootout in the 2A state soccer semifinals Friday at Juan Diego Catholic High.

LCA had numerous chances in both halves, but couldn’t convert and the teams went to extra time after a scoreless first 80 minutes. The two periods of extra periods were also scoreless and the game went to a penalty shootout, where the Ravens prevailed.

BOX ELDER 2, ROY 1

Mitchell Pyle and Brendan Doubay scored first-half goals as Box Elder wrapped up the regular season with a win against Roy. Colton Hill scored for Roy.

WOODS CROSS 4, BOUNTIFUL 1

Woods Cross clinched Region 5’s No. 4 seed in the playoffs with a 4-1 thrashing of Bountiful (1-12-3, 1-6-1 Region 5) in the regular-season finale.

Junior Ortiz scored twice while Jackson Ensign and Andy Hills added a goal each for the Wildcats. Mason Hoffman scored for Bountiful.

Woods Cross (8-7-1, 3-5) went ahead 2-0 in the first two minutes, then ended the first half with two more goals after Hoffman cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 15th minute.

SOFTBALL

CLEARFIELD 11, FREMONT 9

Clearfield used a 10-run second inning to come back and beat Fremont in a Region 1 play-in game Friday. The Falcons clinched the No. 3 seed from the region and will visit Pleasant Grove in the first round of the 6A state playoffs at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Rachel Brown and Jessie Golder knocked in two-run doubles in the second inning and Jayci Finch had a two-run single as the Falcons turned a 6-1 deficit into an 11-6 lead.

Before that, Fremont catcher Brianna George hit a two-run, line-drive homer in the first followed by a three-run blast in the second to give the Silver Wolves the lead.

Fremont’s Ashtyn Meibos hit a two-run homer in the seventh as the Silver Wolves cut an 11-7 deficit to 11-9, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Finch pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed two earned runs on nine hits. Peri Winterbottom added a solo home run for Clearfield.

George hit 2 for 3 with five RBIs.

POSTPONED

— The 4A state playoff first-round pod at Bear River High, previously scheduled for Saturday, has been moved to Tuesday with games starting at 10 a.m.

— Bonneville’s first-round state playoff softball game against Ridgeline, scheduled for Saturday, has been rescheduled to noon Monday at the Spanish Fork Field Complex, Field No. 3

— Woods Cross at Northridge was rescheduled for Monday.

— Corner Canyon at Roy was canceled.

— Box Elder at Copper Hills was canceled.

BASEBALL

BOUNTIFUL 8, WOODS CROSS 4

Bountiful turned a 4-0, first-inning deficit around as the Braves beat Woods Cross to secure Region 5’s four-seed in the upcoming 5A state playoffs.

Bountiful scored two runs in the third inning and three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Nick Stirling and Josh Welling both drove in two runs while Luke Stout tossed a complete game and went 3 for 4 at the plate for Bountiful. Welling hit a home run and Isaac Parry went 3 for 4 with a double.

Calum Seifert hit 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs for Woods Cross.

BOYS TENNIS

REGION 5 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Woods Cross swept all five title matches at Friday’s Region 5 tennis championships at the Ogden Athletic Club. The Wildcats totaled 28 points in first place, followed by Viewmont (21), Bountiful (14) and Box Elder (7).

No. 1 singles: Spencer Johnson (Woods Cross) def. Nate McDonald (Viewmont) 6-1, 6-2

No. 2 singles: Jakob Kempema (Woods Cross) def. Colton Christensen (Viewmont) 6-3, 6-2

No. 3 singles: Holden Iverson (Woods Cross) def. Grant Wilkinson (Viewmont) 6-7, 6-3, 7-5

No. 1 doubles: Peter Richards and Josh Lewis (Woods Cross) def. Stephen Gutke and Jaden Hodges (Viewmont) 4-6, 6-0, 6-2

No. 2 doubles: Tyler Cowley and Mason Cowley (Woods Cross) def. Ryan Trump and Isaak Getz (Viewmont) 6-4, 6-2.
