America needs to take a stand for the innocent, expand background checks

The recent shooting in Las Vegas shows the strength and good will of Americans and our continued willingness to come together and help others in a crisis. However, what confuses me is that after these shootings, nothing changes, except there is an increase in gun sales.

I realize the strong feelings about the Second Amendment and individual rights, but what are the rights of the innocent victims of these massacres? According to data compiled by CNN, America is only 5 percent of the world's population, but we account for 31 percent of all mass shootings. Estimates say Americans own more than 270 million guns, more than people in any other country. Tightening gun laws may not get rid of the guns people currently own, but expanding background checks and eliminating the sale of some weapons may be a step in the right direction. At least America would be taking a stand for the innocent.
