Being from Salt Lake City and wanting to be a marine biologist may seem strange, but the oceans always fascinated me. Although I ended up moving to New York to model, I still carry that passion with me. That’s why I support legislation that would help one of the ocean’s most important creatures: sharks. Sharks play vital roles in structuring marine food webs and increasing biodiversity. Healthy oceans need sharks.
One of the greatest threats facing sharks is the demand for their fins. Every year, fins from up to 73 million sharks enter the global trade. The bipartisan Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act would ban fins nationwide -- we need it passed now.
Shark finning is illegal in our waters, but fins can still be bought and sold in the U.S. We also import from countries with inadequate protections and this bill would reduce the demand for fins, while also reinforcing our status as leaders in shark conservation.
And, who can help? Congressman Rob Bishop, chairman of the committee that decides whether this bill can advance or not.
Rep. Bishop, on behalf of all Utahns who care about our oceans, please keep this bill moving forward.
