OGDEN — This week would be a good time for area residents to drop off turkeys or hams for the United Way and Catholic Community Services turkey drive.
The agencies are hoping to collect at least 100 turkeys and hams each day this week to meet the demand for 1,700 holiday food boxes for those in need.
To date, the agencies are short 775 turkeys or hams needed by Tuesday, the final day of distribution to provide Thanksgiving for Weber County residents. The agencies have collected 925 turkeys and hams so far, about 800 of which they purchased from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
After the 775 are collected, another 1,700 turkeys and hams are needed for the Christmas distribution.
“It is always rough because most people are not thinking about donating a turkey until Nov. 22 when they buy their own Thanksgiving turkeys,” said Maresha Bosgieter, director of Catholic Community Services of Northern Utah.
Thanksgiving food boxes are distributed this Friday, Monday and Tuesday, before many families even buy their own Thanksgiving dinner, Bosgieter said.
“The sooner people donate, the better,” said Taylor Knuth, community services coordinator for United Way of Northern Utah. “We have a hard time those first days of distribution. We struggle to get those.”

Every year, some people donate turkeys after Thanksgiving and those are used for the Christmas food boxes, Bosgieter said.
She’s also hoping to tap into the generosity of companies that give these items to their employees for the holidays.
“There are a lot of companies that still give their employees a turkey or ham for Thanksgiving,” Bosgieter said. “If they are not going to use it, they can drop it off to us.”
Donations are being accepted this week, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Catholic Community Services of Northern Utah, 2504 F Ave. in Ogden.
At United Way of Northern Utah, donations are accepted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and a special promotion is set to collect Saturday donations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at United Way of Northern Utah, 2955 Harrison Blvd, Suite 201, in Ogden.
Those who bring a turkey or ham on Saturday will receive a free gourmet cookie, Knuth said.
