Ogden City Chief Administrative Officer Mark Johnson said Thursday the flights will be suspended starting Jan. 5. Unlike other Allegiant Flights out of Ogden, the Las Vegas routes have performed poorly in terms of passenger numbers, he said.
“There’s been quite a fair amount of competition (to fly to Las Vegas),” Johnson said. “There are some airlines flying out of Salt Lake City right now at a way low cost.”
Allegiant Air spokeswoman Hilarie Grey said the airline is “bullish on demand” and described the move in Ogden as a “seasonal suspension.” Grey offered no time frame for when the service could start up again.
Johnson described the suspension as a mutual agreement between the city and Allegiant and said the flight could make a comeback.
“Just because we’re suspending it, doesn’t mean we’re canceling it,” he said. “We will revisit it.”
Allegiant has offered Ogden service to Mesa, Arizona, since 2012 and began Los Angeles service in October. Flights to Oakland, California, are tentatively set to begin the first quarter of 2018. The company is also considering service to Orlando, Florida.
Johnson said the Mesa and Los Angeles flights are running as scheduled and are not impacted by the Las Vegas suspension.
