Richard Campbell Roberts

Richard Campbell Roberts was born in Centerville, Utah, to Florence Campbell and Harold Dibble Roberts, on November 20, 1932. He died December 2, 2017. He married Colleen Florence on March 22, 1957. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on July 6, 1977. Richard and Colleen had four sons: Brett (Patti), Kyle (Cami), Clark (Maggie), and Ty (Stacey) Roberts; 14 grand- children and 13 great-grandchildren.

Richard attended school at Centerville Elementary, South Davis Junior High in Bountiful, and Davis High in Kaysville, Utah. He later received a scholarship to attend George Washington University in Washington D.C., where he received an associate degree. Richard was awarded the National Defense Education Act Fellowship which allowed him to earn a Doctorate in History from the University of Utah.

Besides his academic training, Richard also completed ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) in the U.S. Air Force and Army ROTC programs. He trained at Fort Benning, Georgia, and trained troops at Fort Carson, Colorado. After completing his Army assignment, he returned to Utah, and shifted from Infantry Officer to Military Intelligence Officer, where he rose to the rank of Colonel in the Utah Army National Guard. He served as Commander of the 142nd Military Intelligence Company (Linguist), and as Commander of the 142nd Military Intelligence Battalion (Linguist), and as Military Intelligence Officer for the State of Utah.

Richard loved teaching and he taught French one year at Davis High School, and two years of French and History at Highland High in Salt Lake City. After that, he served 32 years as a faculty member in History at Weber State University. In addition to his teaching, he was Chairman of the Department of History for 17 years. For his teaching and service to the University, Richard was awarded the H. Aldous Dixon Award and an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities. He also published 15 books and several academic articles, among which were: Legacy: A History of the Utah National Guard, A History of the B. H. Roberts Family, History of the Life of Colleen Florence Roberts, and his own biography, The Life and Reminisces of Richard Campbell Roberts. He loved his career at Weber State!

Richard lived a religious life also. He served a LDS mission to France. He was a High Counselor in the East Ogden Stake, Bishop of the Ogden 33rd Ward, Historian of the Ogden Utah Stake, and served an inner-city mission to the Monroe Branch with his wife, Colleen.

He is preceded in death by his wife; parents and all his siblings.

Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon, on Saturday, December 9, 2017, at the Taylor Canyon Ward, 1643 26th St., Ogden. A viewing will be held on Friday, December 8, 2017, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd., and Saturday at the church, prior to the service, from 11 to 11:40 a.m. Interment in the Centerville Cemetery where Military Honors will be accorded.
