Kent grew up in North Ogden, Utah. He served in the Central Atlantic States Mission. He met Pamela Ford while attending Weber State College; they were married in the Logan LDS Temple on July 9, 1964. They have five children.
He started his career at South Ogden Jr. High where he spent 34 years as a science teacher and counselor. He was a dedicated scout master and helped numerous young men achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. He served in many church callings including Bishop of the Washington Terrace 8th Ward.
