LAYTON — A family of four was displaced early Thursday morning after a shed fire spread to their home, officials say.

Layton Fire Department crews were dispatched to a reported shed fire threatening a home at about 2:17 a.m. Thursday, July 13.

Fire Marshal Doug Bitton said a 12-year-old boy in the home had been up watching a movie when he heard popping sounds and discovered the fire. He alerted his parents, and the family of four was able to escape without injury.

When crews arrived within five minutes, they found that the shed was fully engulfed in flames and had spread to the nearby home. Crews contained the fire within three minutes, Bitton said.

Damage to the home was limited to the exterior siding and electrical wiring, he said, but it has prevented the family from staying in the home. Damage is estimated at $9,000.

The cause is still under investigation but is not considered to be suspicious, Bitton said.
