Suspicious device causes bomb scare in Kearns

KEARNS — Authorities say police have arrested three people after investigating a shoplifting and bomb scare in a Salt Lake County neighborhood Saturday night.

West Jordan Police Officer Craig Carroll said Sunday morning that officers were tracking suspects in a West Jordan shoplifting case when they arrived at a home in the town of Kearns around 8 p.m. Saturday.

Carroll says officers evacuated the home and called bomb technicians after discovering a suspicious device in the home’s garage.

Authorities determined the device was not an explosive but arrested one person at the home on suspicion of theft.

Carroll says two others were arrested at the home but he did not know if they were arrested in connection with the theft or another issue.

Carroll did not have additional details about the arrests or theft.
