OGDEN — There are still a few weeks to upgrade or trade in your skiing equipment before Northern Utah’s ski resorts open for the season.

Skiing and snowboarding aren’t the cheapest of sports, but for those looking for a deal on gear, ski swaps are the place to go. More than 1,000 pieces of new and used winter sporting equipment will be on sale at the annual Ogden Ski Swap, being held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10 and 11, at the Weber County Fairgrounds.

Ogden Ski Swap organizer Dale Roberts said attendance at the swap is “usually a mix” of beginner skiers and those who have spent years on the slopes.

“It’s probably mostly people who know what a ski swap is. That’s where they’re going to find some really good equipment for a discounted rate,” Roberts said.

 Ogden Ski Swap

Where: Weber County Fairgrounds, 1000 N. 1200 West, Ogden

Admission: $5 Friday, Free on Saturday

Sell your gear: Drop off items Thursday 5-9 p.m. or Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Ogden Ski Swap takes a 25 percent commission.

New skis, including bindings, will be priced $179 and up, while used skis usually start at $79, Roberts said. New boots generally start around $149-$159. Savvy shoppers can snag a pair of used boots for as cheap as $20, but those will sell “extremely fast,” he added.

“If you’re looking for a deal, come Friday,” Roberts said. “If you’re just going to buy new stuff, come Saturday.”

For beginner skiers, vendors will be on hand to help size and pick the right type of equipment. Roberts recommends investing in new boots and buying used skis instead.

“If you’re going to spend, spend in the boot because the boot will make the difference in a day of skiing,” he said.

Skiers can also bring in their old equipment to sell on both days, though the Ogden Ski Swap will take a 25 percent commission fee for any gear sold.

If Ogden doesn’t have the equipment you want, you can also head up to Logan to try your luck:
