LAYTON — The Region 1 girls soccer title is there for Northridge to take, but the Knights can’t afford too many more setbacks after two losses in the first half of region play.
Northridge received a much-needed boost Thursday.
Playing a Layton squad that entered the match undefeated in region play and riding an emotional high after handing Syracuse its first loss of the season, the Knights emerged with a 2-0 victory.
“We just worked hard to the end,” said senior Brooke Stoker, who scored Northridge’s first goal of the game in the 20th minute.
The effort was an improvement from what Northridge exhibited in a 2-1 loss to Davis on Tuesday, Stoker said.
“I feel like at the end of the Davis (game) we kind of gave up, and we were nervous before the game started, and this game we just gave everything we had until the last minute and didn’t let them get a goal,” she said.
With the win, Northridge pulled into a three-way tie with Layton and Syracuse as the points leader in the region, though the Knights have played one more match than the Lancers and Titans.
Tiani Fonoti also scored, with Angela Steenblick picking up the assist, in the 32nd minute for Northridge.
“We did a nice job possessing the ball,” Northridge coach Wyatt Kennah said. “We controlled the possession the entire game, which was huge for us. We controlled the possession and we dictated the flow.”
The shutout was shared by Abbey Bush and Weber State University commit Mekell Moss. Moss played the first half and Bush played the second.
