PLAIN CITY — A uniquely sweet breakfast led to a uniquely sweet performance on the soccer field for Syracuse High’s Sarah Wynn on Thursday.

The freshman had cinnamon rolls for her first meal of the day and went on to score a hat trick as Syracuse defeated Fremont 3-0 in the region finale for both teams.

“My dad said I needed to have a good breakfast for the game, so he made me cinnamon rolls,” Wynn said.

Wynn scored her first goal in the first minute and tallied her second in the 19th. Both were assisted by fellow freshman Caroline Stringfellow, who now has 25 assists for the season.

Wynn finished the hat trick in the 62nd minute. The three goals took her season total to 12.

“I was just super energetic today and came out hard,” Wynn said.

Syracuse coach Taylor Allen wanted his team to play well even though it had much less to play for than Fremont. The Titans had already locked up the No. 1 seed from Region 1 while Fremont needed to win to clinch a playoff spot. A draw would have forced a play-in game between Fremont and Davis for the fourth and final playoff spot.

Allen started subbing out key starters in the second half, but the Titans had already established firm control.

“We weren’t trying to throw the game,” Allen said. “I’m too competitive for that. We did want to get our studs off without getting them injured.”

Fremont got dangerous with some attacks in the first half but one shot hit the post and another hit the crossbar.

Syracuse (14-2, 10-2 Region 1) will open the 6-A state tournament Tuesday against West Jordan, the fourth seed from Region 3 and a team the Titans thumped 8-0 in the preseason. West Jordan is 4-11 and has a goal differential of minus-59, according to the Deseret News.

West Jordan isn’t the only team that struggled massively to compete throughout the season that will make the playoffs while Fremont (7-6-3, 6-5-1) sits at home and watches.

Kearns, which will be the fourth seed from Region 2, is 2-12 and has a goal differential of minus-79, according to the Deseret News. Kearns lost to Bountiful, which will be the third seed from Region 5 in the 5-A classification, 14-0 earlier in the season and was also blanked 8-0 by Grantsville, a 3-A team.

Allen said he thinks Fremont is “good enough” to be in the playoffs.

“It’s sad that these teams that aren’t winning many (are in) and Fremont’s getting left out because we have more teams than everybody else,” Allen said.

Region 1 has seven teams while the other three regions in 6-A have only five.

KAYSVILLE — Davis (8-5-2, 6-4-2 Region 1) scored all three goals in the first half on the way to the defeat of Clearfield (1-14-1, 0-12) to clinch a spot in the playoffs.

Maddie McLeod, Kate McMaster and Zoe Jacobs each scored a goal for the Darts.

Halle Moffat earned the clean sheet in goal.

Davis will enter the 6-A playoffs as Region 1’s fourth seed, traveling to face Region 3 champion Copper Hills (13-1-2, 11-1 Region 3) on Tuesday, Oct. 10.

PLEASANT VIEW — Atley Thompson scored the game’s only goal in the 39th minute as Layton knocked off Weber on the final day of Region 1 play.

The victory sends Layton (10-5-1, 7-4-1 Region 1) to the 6-A playoffs as the third seed from Region 1. The Lancers will travel to play Region 3’s second seed Herriman (12-4, 10-2 Region 3) in the first round Tuesday.

Meg Edwards earned the shutout, saving a penalty kick in the second half to preserve the win.

Weber ends the season at 5-8-3 overall, 3-8-1 in Region 1.

Northridge did not play Thursday but will be Region 1’s two-seed, hosting Region 3’s three-seed Riverton on Tuesday.

MORGAN — Morgan capped a perfect Region 13 season with a home shutout of Grantsville.

Logan Duran and Morgan Cragun each scored twice, with Cragun also tallying two assists. Rhylee Freeman and Kaylee Giles scored one goal apiece, and Emily Edgington added an assist.

Taylor Condie and Samantha Bateman shared the clean sheet.

Morgan (10-5, 8-0 Region 13) will host the fifth place team from Region 14 in the first round of the 3-A playoffs Wednesday, Oct. 11.

SMITHFIELD — Sidney Barlow scored twice as Sky View closed out a perfect run through Region 12.

Emmie Woodward also scored. Kylee Griffin assisted on one of Barlow’s goals.

Sky View (12-2-2, 10-0 Region 12) enters the 4-A playoffs on an 11-match winning streak.

Justin Johnson contributed to score reports.
