SPANISH FORK — Bear River softball scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4, walk-off victory over Spanish Fork to win the 4A state championship Saturday at the Spanish Fork Complex.

Taylor Fox and Kapri Toone each hit solo home runs in the bottom of the first inning to put the Bears on top 2-0. Spanish Fork scored two in the third, one in the fourth and one in the seventh to go up 4-2.

Bear River (25-5) didn’t answer until the final frame.

In the bottom of the seventh, Fox hit another bomb with Mercedes Call on base and one out, tying the game 4-4.

Toone hit a two-out double, then was swapped at second base for speed-up runner Ashley Mickelson.

The Dons then intentionally walked Ashley Hess. Mickelson and Hess advanced to third and second, respectively, on a passed ball.

Oaklee Trapp then stroked a grounder to the shortstop, who fielded the ball and fired to first. Trapp stretched to the first-base bag and beat the throw on a close play, allowing Mickelson to score the championship-winning run.

“It’s really, really sweet because we beat such a good team,” Bear River coach Calvin Bingham said. “This may be the best team I’ve ever seen in the tournament that we beat.”

Fox finished with three RBIs. Toone hit 3 for 3 with a solo home run, a double and a walk. Trapp’s RBI single was her only hit of the day.

Toone pitched a complete game in the win, giving up 11 hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

The championship win avenges a Bear River 14-7 loss to the Dons (27-3) on March 16.

The Bears now have nine state championships, adding this year’s to a 2016 title and a run of five straight from 2008-12. Only Manti (10) has more titles in UHSAA softball history.

Bingham has coached Bear River to all nine titles beginning in 2001, the most championships by any coach in UHSAA softball history.
