PROVO — Utah County officials say a woman and her injured dog made it safely down a mountain trail Sunday after rescuers were unable to help the pet.

Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon says the 26-year-old woman’s dog was kicked in the chest by a mountain goat on a Mt. Timpanogos trail.

The woman’s mother in Reno, Nev., called emergency dispatchers around 5 p.m. to request help from a sheriff’s rescue team.

Cannon says rescuers could not make the four-hour trip to help the dog off the mountain because the crew needed to be ready for any calls to rescue people.

The woman and the dog made it down the mountain after several hours.

Cannon says the dog was taken to a veterinarian for treatment and is expected to recover.
