SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The widow of former Utah congressman Bill Orton is running for a seat in Utah’s Legislature currently held by Salt Lake City Rep. Rebecca Chavez-Houck.

Jacquelyn Orton announced this week that she’s running to replace Chavez-Houck next year.

Chavez-Houck says she’s not running for re-election next year. She is a Democrat who has served in the Legislature since 2008.

Orton says she has worked on dozens of campaigns and lobbied at state Legislatures, the U.S. Congress and the White House but was reluctant to become a candidate herself.

Her late husband Bill Orton died in 2009 in all-terrain vehicle accident. He served in Congress as a Democrat from 1991 to 1997.
