Christian PoPoola Jr., a top basketball recruit originally committed to BYU, surprisingly signed with the University of Utah on Saturday.

PoPoola Jr., who played at Lone Peak High before moving to Las Vegas to play at renowned Bishop Gorman High School, is a top-150 recruit according to 247 Sports.

The 6-foot-4 guard gained notoriety on the camp circuit by winning several dunk contests and originally committed to BYU in August 2016.

He did not sign with BYU in the November early signing period and still had not signed after the regular signing period opened April 12.

PoPoola Jr. joins two more top recruits from Utah — guard Jaxon Brenchley from Ridgeline and big man Branden Carlson from Bingham — in the Utes’ 2017 signing class.
