PLEASANT VIEW — Syracuse’s first outright region volleyball title might have seemed like a foregone conclusion heading into Tuesday’s matchup against last-place Weber, but it ended up requiring quite the effort.

Syracuse dropped the opening set but rebounded to take the following three to improve its Region 1 record to 10-0 and claim the outright title.

Even the sets the Titans won were strongly contested by the Warriors. The two teams were tied 18-18 in the second set before Syracuse scored six straight, eventually winning 25-21.

Weber led the third set 15-9 before Syracuse scored five straight. Later in the set, with the teams tied 18-18, the Titans went on a 5-1 run. Syracuse won the set 25-23.

In the fourth set, the Warriors used a 7-0 run to build an 11-6 lead, but the Titans recovered and eventually took a 24-20 advantage. Still, Weber refused to quit, scoring four straight to tie the set at 24-24.

Back-to-back kills by freshman Saige Dimick — the younger sister of former Syracuse and University of Utah football player Hunter Dimick — and senior Breanna Jessop gave Syracuse a 26-24 win and a chance to finally celebrate.

“They were scrappy,” Syracuse coach Corrie Vigil said of Weber. “They picked up a lot and they played us well, I thought.”

A timeout was called after Weber tied the fourth set at 24-24 and Syracuse setter Aubri Whatcott said the conversation in the huddle was “short and sweet.”

“We were just like, ‘Do we want to win? Put the ball away. Close out,’” Whatcott said.

For seniors like Jessop and Whatcott, the region title is just another mark of success. They won the district championship together as freshman.

“We’ve always had a really good group of girls,” Jessop said. “We were a good sophomore team and we were a good JV team and just moved up to being a great varsity team.”

Whatcott finished with 37 assists and 10 digs. Valerie Harker had 21 digs, and Megan Chandler had 11 kills and 10 digs.

Syracuse (24-2, 10-0 Region 1) has two region games left before the start of the 6-A tournament on Nov. 2 at Utah Valley University.
