Marvez: 'Samoa' Joe Seanoa no longer a man on an island

"Samoa" Joe Seanoa is no longer a man on an island.

A singles performer throughout his six-plus years in Impact Wrestling, Seanoa has branched into the tag-team ranks. He and new partner Nick "Magnus" Aldis are challenging Matt Morgan and Tommy "Crimson" Mercer for Impact's tag-team title Sunday on the "Against All Odds" pay-per-view show emanating from Orlando, Fla.

"There's definitely a good symbiotic relationship with me and him," Seanoa said of Magnus during a Tuesday telephone interview. "He shows up wanting to go 120 miles per hour. He's got intelligent ideas and he's ready to go.

Marvez: Heffron laments passing of ECW Arena days

Before its 2010 demolition, the Spectrum was home to five-figure crowds for World Wrestling Entertainment and World Championship Wrestling events for more than 30 years.

Yet it wasn't the most iconic building in Philadelphia for grappling shows.

Marvez: Charles Wright on his stints as The Godfather and Papa Shango

Charles Wright laughed when asked to reflect upon his 15-plus years in pro wrestling.

"I had a good time," he said.

No kidding.

Marvez: Marquez lends his expertise to the theater

A critically acclaimed play is tackling racism and the trappings of stardom in pro wrestling.

Pablo Marquez can personally relate on both accounts.

Marquez -- who is choreographing the grappling action for "The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity," a play set to debut next month in Boca Raton, Fla. -- had visions of fame and fortune when he began wrestling almost two decades ago. Marquez worked for two major U.S. companies in the 1990s (WWE and Extreme Championship Wrestling). He then spent extensive time performing in Japan, Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Marvez: Back injury forces Steve Robinson from ring

They are the toughest orders that Steve "Corporal" Robinson will have to carry out.

Doctors have told Robinson -- one of pro wrestling's most storied hard-core performers -- his grappling days are over because of a serious back injury. Robinson acknowledged this last Saturday night when forfeiting his Juggalo Championship Wrestling (JCW) heavyweight title in Detroit.

Marvez: 'Gold Standard' Shelton Benjamin now shining in Ring of Honor

The Ring of Honor talent roster has more glitter thanks to Shelton Benjamin.

Nicknamed the "Gold Standard" during a decade-long WWE stint, Benjamin is shining with his new employer. As ROH's tag-team champions, Benjamin and fellow ex-WWE castoff Charlie Haas have displayed excellent technical skill and brought some much-needed star power as the company tries building momentum for its syndicated Saturday-night telecasts on the Sinclair Broadcasting Group.

Marvez: Matt Cross still eyes WWE despite 'Tough Enough' ouster

Reality television was a surreal experience for Matt "M-Dogg 20" Cross.

He is charismatic, articulate and athletically gifted. He also was the most seasoned pro wrestler to participate in the "Tough Enough" competition for aspiring WWE stars earlier this year.

Unfortunately for Cross, those positive traits weren't evident on the show. He was the second competitor eliminated, being booted in dramatic fashion by "Tough Enough" host "Stone Cold" Steve Austin.

Marvez: Ring of Honor producer Jim Cornette circles back to the '80s

Jim Cornette has a simple mantra for what he hopes to accomplish with Ring of Honor's new nationally syndicated weekly pro-wrestling shows for the Sinclair Broadcasting Group.

"I don't want to bring pro wrestling back into the 1980s. I want to bring back wrestling with the logic of the '80s with people who were born in the '80s," Cornette said Thursday in a telephone interview. "You can take the vibe from the '80s and build to a big fight between two guys where you want to see who wins and what happens. The difference is, you're plugging in guys in their 20s."

Marvez: Talking with Bill Apter, soon to get three awards

For his 41 years of journalistic contributions to pro wrestling, Bill Apter will soon be honored with special awards by three different entities.

But that doesn't mean Apter is ready to write the final chapter on his own career in grappling.

Apter remains just as busy as when he was synonymous with the newsstand magazines he began working for in 1970. Apter, 66, still juggles a host of wrestling projects while holding a day job helping Philadelphia-area adults with disabilities find employment.

Marvez: Gail Kim returns to Impact Wrestling

Gail Kim learned the hard way that Impact Wrestling is where she belongs.

Marvez: George Napolitano's picture-perfect 'Hot Shots and High Spots'

What may be Hulk Hogan's final match is cause for reflection about pro wrestling from earlier eras. The same taste of nostalgia can be found in a stunning new 320-page photography collection that features Hogan on its cover.

"Hot Shots and High Spots" ($22.95; ECW Press) showcases hundreds of shots taken by George Napolitano, a longtime grappling journalist who began covering matches in 1970. The photos feature not only every major star from the past four decades but behind-the-scenes images such as the late Andre the Giant hoisting four female wrestlers in the air like a human cape and a bleached-blond Paul Levesque long before he became a WWE headliner as Triple H.

"Honestly, what's in that book is a fraction of the stuff that I could have used," Napolitano said in a recent telephone interview. "If I actually had to look at everything I've shot, I'd still be looking and we wouldn't have a book."

Marvez: 'Bound for Glory' a golden opportunity for Bobby Roode

At the time a Hulk Hogan-vs.-Sting match was headlining one of the most successful pay-per-view shows of the 1990s, Bobby Roode was training to become a pro wrestler in his hometown of Peterborough, Ontario.

Fourteen years later, Sting and Hogan will meet again in what very well may be the Hulkster's final in-ring appearance. But this time, Roode has the chance to steal the spotlight for himself Oct. 16 in the co-main event of the "Bound for Glory" pay-per-view show emanating from Philadelphia.

Marvez: Here's Stan Hansen, who details his life in 'The Last Outlaw'

Stan Hansen's recently released autobiography reveals plenty of little-known facts about the "Bad Man from Borger, Texas."

Marvez: Steve Karel on his Urban Wrestling Federation

Steve Karel is finding new ways of pushing pro wrestling to the extreme.

The behind-the-scenes general manager of Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) during its 1990s heyday, Karel wants to re-create a cutting-edge vibe with his Urban Wrestling Federation (UWF). Karel hopes to merge the grappling and hip-hop worlds into a new hard-edged genre.

Marvez: 'Gunner' Lail pumped about grappling gig on 9-11 anniversary

Chad "Gunner" Lail is set to appear in the biggest pay-per-view match of his pro-wrestling career.

Doing so on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks will make the moment even more special.
