Harrisville council member has reservations about budget

HARRISVILLE — The city council, with one dissenting vote, has adopted a budget for the 2012-13 fiscal year.

City council revises alcohol ordinance

Harrisville -- The city council has passed an alcoholic beverage control ordinance.

Poor economy shutters two Harrisville restaurants

HARRISVILLE -- Two well-known Harrisville restaurants have closed.

Boccia's Pizza Bistro and Moore's Halibut House both closed their doors at the end of 2011.

Boccia's had been in business since 2001 and under current ownership since 2004. Nick VanArsdell, the restaurant's general manager, said that the overhead was too high and the restaurant wasn't able to turn enough of a profit to keep the business going.

OGDEN -- The chatter of little voices drowns out Cory and Kasey Wardell as they try to describe their life with five children under the age of 5.

West Haven offers discount on burial plots

WEST HAVEN -- The city is ready to sell burial plots in the new cemetery and is offering a discount for early purchases.

City residents or property owners can go to City Hall between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Jan. 23 or 24 to purchase plots at the discounted price of $450. After the presale, the plots will cost $550.

"It's a great public service to the residents," said West Haven Parks and Recreation Director Brock Randall.

'Raunchy' Christmas deer light display brings complaints

HARRISVILLE -- It's a redneck Christmas on Larsen Lane where Isaac Oberg has created a unique outdoor display.

Oberg, a self-proclaimed redneck, has three lighted Christmas deer in his yard. One deer is hanging from a tree with red lights representing flowing entrails, and two are stacked on top of each other simulating copulation with red lights representing male genitalia.

WEST HAVEN -- Five candidates are seeking election to three seats in the West Haven City Council race.

Incumbents Blaine H. Holmes, Stephanie Carlson and Dawnell Musselman are being challenged by Dennis L. Dallinga and Gary J. Stimpson.

HARRISVILLE -- The city is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of vandals who have repeatedly set fire to the restrooms at Independence and Memorial parks.

Racy lingerie billboard angers Plain City woman

WEST HAVEN -- A Plain City woman says a lingerie billboard between the 12th and 21st street exits on Interstate 15 is inappropriate for public viewing and should be changed.

The billboard, which features a woman lying in a seductive pose and wearing a skimpy outfit, advertises for Dr. John's Lingerie, a sexually oriented business with stores across the country, including one in Roy.

Plain City resident Martha Bodily thinks the sign is inappropriate and is trying to rally support to get the billboard removed.

Harrisville won't help residents with sewage backflow

HARRISVILLE -- Homeowners looking for help with sewage backflow problems were told they are on their own and Harrisville cannot help them fix the problem.

On Aug. 1, Liberty Avenue resident Millissa Ferguson woke up to find that the previous night's storm had brought more than just water. Her son found filthy brown liquid flooding the basement from sewage pouring into homes.

The overflow occurred when the Weber County main sewer line was overridden with water from the July 31 storm. Kent Jones, a consulting engineer, said the storm was the type that happens about once every hundred years.

Animal control to cost more in Harrisville

HARRISVILLE -- The city will pay almost 29 percent more to Weber County Animal Control next year than it did in the past, with a larger fee increase forecast for the year after that.
