Big 'Loser' returns to Top of Utah

She may have lost in one aspect, but it has been a major gain in other areas of her life.

Sarah Nitta, who is originally from Bountiful, lost 106 pounds on the reality TV show "The Biggest Loser" during its 11th season, which aired in 2011.

Nitta, 28, now lives in St. George and works at The Biggest Loser resort in Ivins.

She will speak about preventive health and tell her story of weight loss at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Roy City Recreation Department. The event is free to the public.

Turn your trash into laughs

"In my day, we didn't have these fancy schmancy electronic toys. We didn't have smartphones, 'Rock Band' or Wii. We played with stuff our parents thre w in the trash. And we liked it!"

New Utah author Nick Sarkady isn't crabby like "Grumpy Old Man" on "Saturday Night Live," but he does remember that, back in his day, children got creative and played with anything they could get their hands on.

SPUG: Give from the heart -- or don't give at all

This year, my family has decided to forgo a hefty segment of our traditional gift-giving rituals. The decision is mainly for budgetary reasons, but also due to holiday stress.

Sometimes, traditions become worn-out. It never hurts to examine a ritual and ask why it started, why it continues -- and whether everyone agrees that it is still a positive event or practice.

My family is axing our name drawing, since my siblings and I have grown apart geographically. The ritual has turned into a boring exchange of mailed gift certificates.

'Scouted' features young Utah women

Some were at the mall -- strolling along, eating frozen yogurt and window-shopping -- when they were spotted. Others were cheering at their high school's football game. And others were simply helping their moms pick out fresh produce at the local farmer's market.

An E! Channel documentary, "Scouted," follows the path of young women, discovered by local modeling scouts, living in Salt Lake City, Houston, Dallas, San Francisco and Richmond, Va.

Why try Greek? It’s good

Grocery store shelves are bursting with more and more varieties of Greek yogurt to meet the demands of customers who are hooked on this new twist on a well-known dairy product.

Compared with traditional yogurt, Greek yogurt is thicker, as well as being higher in protein and calcium.

Longing for home: It turns out, Americans are not those brave souls who follow Manifest Destiny

OGDEN -- Susan Matt ordered a ginger-lemon iced tea and settled into a metal chair on a deck that smelled of warm wood and sugary pastries at an East Bench neighborhood coffee shop -- and began to explain why she would write a book called "Homesickness."

Pointing northeast toward Ben Lomond peak, the Weber State University history professor said, "Someone told me the mountain was named by a homesick Scottish immigrant."

The book, "Homesickness: An American History," addresses what mobility has meant to Americans.
