'Dog Vacay' gives Fido temporary digs while you are out of town

The next time you're going out of town, you don't have to leave Fido with your slacker brother or at a kennel where the dog might be cooped up in a cage all day.

With Internet start-up Dog Vacay, you can drop off your pooch at the home of a fellow dog lover. Hosts watch your pet while you're away and set their own rates (usually $15 to $80 a day).

Outlet malls are growing bigger, more popular

COMMERCE, Calif. -- At Citadel Outlets, the sounds of jackhammering and the whir of electric drills are as common these days as a can't-miss deal.

The City of Commerce shopping center has been in expansion mode, building a wing last fall that brought 36 stores and an additional 152,000 square feet to the mall. Construction workers are currently putting the finishing touches on half a dozen more stores, including Coach Factory Store and Not Your Daughter's Jeans, and getting ready to build another wing that is slated to open by the holiday season next year.

At a time when the rest of the retail landscape is still in recovery mode, a rising star has emerged: the outlet mall.

Tip for outlet shoppers: be savvy

The main draw of outlet shopping is the promise of name brands at low prices, but customers need to be savvy when they hit these stores.

Merchandise at outlet stores comes from a variety of sources and isn't always leftover product from the brands' full-price operations.
